Wolves Of The North
''Wolves of the North'' is a 1924 American Northern drama film serial directed by and starring William Duncan. This serial is considered to be a lost film. The working title was ''The Free Traders'' and the film featured a polar bear cub named Pluto. Pluto had been “captured by a whaler" and ended up at Los Angeles Harbor where he was acquired by the Universal City Zoo. He played a pet of the "queen of the fur traders" (Esther Ralston). Plot As described in a film magazine, Alan Gray (Duncan), free trader, beats up Dan Martin (Rice) and Pierre DuPre (Bonomo), fur pirates, who accuse him of poaching. Grimwood Mears (Comstock), manager of the powerful North Company post, nearly loses his job because of the inroads made on the company's business by the Chester Post, the free trading company operated by Madge Chester (Ralston). William Duncan (actor)
William Duncan (16 December 1879 – 7 February 1961), born in Dundee, Scotland, was known as a major actor, producer, writer, and director of film serials and features in Cinema of the United States, Hollywood. After immigrating to the United States as a child with his family, he became a leading star in the new film industry. Promoted as a Scottish star, he became one of the highest paid actors when under contract to Vitagraph. Duncan worked with major studios of the day, including the Selig Polyscope Company and Vitagraph. As was typical of many early films, especially the silents, most of his films have not survived to the present day. Robert Homans
Robert Edward Homans (November 8, 1877 – July 28, 1947) was an American actor who entered films in 1923 after a lengthy stage career. Life and career Robert Homans was born November 8, 1877, in Malden, Massachusetts. Although he studied medicine for three years after his college graduation, a 1906 newspaper article noted that "the 'stage bee' got into his bonnet and nothing would do but that he become an actor." His Broadway credits include '' The Blue Bird'' (1910), ''The Blue Envelope'' (1915), ''Johnny, Get Your Gun'' (1916) and ''Like a King'' (1921). His screen debut came in ''Madame Sherry''. He appeared in some 400 films between 1917 and 1946. On April 18, 1909, Homans married Agnes J. Mellon in San Francisco. Another source gives his wife's name as Agnes Maynard. One major contributing factor is the common use of nitrate film until the early 1950s. This type of film is highly flammable, and there have been several devastating fires, such as the 1914 Lubin vault fire, the Universal Pictures fire in 1924, the Warner Bros. First National fire in 1933, the British and Dominions Imperial Studios fire in 1936, and the 1937 Fox vault fire, the 1965 MGM vault fire.
