Radcliffe is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, Greater Manchester, England. It lies in the Irwell Valley northwest of Manchester and southwest of Bury, Greater Manchester, Bury and is contiguous with Whitefield, Greater Manchester, Whitefield to the south. The disused Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal bisects the town. Radcliffe Bridge railway station served Radcliffe, in Greater Manchester, England. It was built on the Manchester, Bury and Rossendale Railway line, between and . It was opened on 25 September 1846 and was closed on 7 July 1958. History The Manchester, Bury and Rossendale Railway was formally opened from to on 25 September 1846, by which time it had amalgamated with other railways (also under construction) to form the East Lancashire Railway. Among the original stations was that at Radcliffe Bridge, from Clifton Junction; it opened on 28 September, when public train services began. The station was located between the Sion Street and Green Street bridges, immediately south-east of Grundy Street. Radcliffe is a tram stop in the town of Radcliffe, Greater Manchester, England. It is on the Bury Line of Greater Manchester's light rail Metrolink system. History It originally opened on 1 September 1879 as Radcliffe New railway station on the former heavy rail line from Manchester Victoria to Bury. It was named Radcliffe Central railway station to differentiate it from Radcliffe Bridge railway station on the line from Manchester to Bury via Clifton which closed in 1966.
