William Jack (Australian Politician)
William Mathers Jack, OBE (1 May 189014 September 1982), known as "Silent Billy", was an Australian politician. Born in Dundee in Scotland, where he became an apprentice grocer at the age of 14, he migrated to Australia in 1912. After arrival in Australia, Jack became a grocer and businessman in North Sydney, and was elected to Willoughby Council. In 1949, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Liberal member for North Sydney, a position he held until his retirement in 1966. During his parliamentary service, Jack earned the sobriquet "Silent Billy" because he only made five speeches in the House in 17 years, including his maiden and farewell speeches. On 29 August 1962, he commenced his first speech in seven years with the words: ''I can remain silent no longer''. William Jack (botanist)
William Jack FRSE (1795 in Aberdeen – 1822 in Bencoolen, Sumatra) was a noted Scottish botanist and medical practitioner. Life He was born in Aberdeen on 29 January 1795 the son of Rev Prof William Jack and his wife Grace Bolt (d.1850). His father was a regent (the equivalent of Fellow) at King's College, Aberdeen at the time of Jack's birth, and went on to be first Sub-Principal and then Principal of the College. Jack studied at King's College, Aberdeen (which later became the University of Aberdeen) and received an M.A. degree at the age of 16, then continued studies in medicine in London, graduating as an M.D., and was admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1812. Jack was employed by the East India Company as a surgeon in India, where he corresponded extensively with botanist Nathaniel Wallich. William Jack FRSE (29 May 1834 – 20 March 1924) was a Scottish mathematician and journalist. He was Editor of the Glasgow Herald newspaper from 1870 to 1876, and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Glasgow from 1879 until 1909. Life He was born on 29 May 1834 in Stewarton in Ayrshire the son of Robert Jack of Irvine. He was educated at Irvine Academy, going on to study mathematics at the University of Glasgow, graduating with an MA in 1853. He then continued his studies at the University of Cambridge, graduating with a second MA in 1859. From 1860 to 1866 he was HM Inspector of Schools for Scotland. In 1866 he accepted the post of Professor of Natural Philosophy (Physics) at Owens College in Manchester and held this position until 1870 when he moved to Glasgow as Editor of the Glasgow Herald newspaper. William Brydone Jack
William Brydone Jack, (23 November 1817 – 23 November 1886), was the University of New Brunswick's first surveying professor and its second president (1861–1885). He was educated at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. In 1840, he was appointed Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at what was then King's College (founded in 1785) and gave lectures in surveying as part of the mathematics curriculum. William Brydone Jack also designed a small wooden observatory which became operational in 1851. In 1855, William Brydone Jack, together with Dr. J.B. Toldervy, determined the longitude of Fredericton using the exchange of telegraph signals with Harvard College Observatory. This was the first precisely determined longitude in Canada.
