''Wild is the Wind'' is a 1957 American drama film directed by George Cukor and starring Anna Magnani, Anthony Quinn, and Anthony Franciosa. It tells the story of an American rancher who, after his wife dies, goes to Italy to marry her sister, but finds that she falls in love with his young ranch hand. The screenplay was adapted by Arnold Schulman from the 1947 Italian film '' Fury'', which was in turn loosely based on Giovanni Verga's novella '' La Lupa''. The title song, " Wild Is the Wind", was performed by Johnny Mathis. The Italian title was 'Selvaggio è il vento', literal translation of the original English. Plot Gino (Anthony Quinn) is a sheepherder in Nevada who travels to Italy to marry Gioia (Anna Magnani), the sister of his wife, who died a number of years previously. "Wild Is the Wind" is a song written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington for the 1957 film '' Wild Is the Wind''. Johnny Mathis recorded the song for the film and released it as a single in November 1957. Mathis' version reached No. 22 on the ''Billboard'' chart. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song in 1958, but lost to " All the Way" by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn from '' The Joker is Wild''. The song has been recorded many times, by many performers. The best known versions are those recorded by Nina Simone (from her 1966 album of the same name) and by David Bowie (from his 1976 album ''Station to Station''). ''Wild Is the Wind'' is the sixth studio album by American singer and pianist Nina Simone released by Philips Records in 1966. The album was compiled from several recordings that were left over from sessions (in 1964 and 1965) for previous Philips albums. In 2020, the album was ranked 212 on ''Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time''. Response The album was a ''Billboard'' magazine "special merit pick" on release, with the reviewer commenting: "Simone ... sets up an exceptional romantic mood that offers top listening delight". The song " Four Women" was released as a single, and gained attention when banned by the New York jazz focused radio station WLIB due to concern over the lyrics.
