Who's Who
A Who's Who (or Who Is Who) is a reference work consisting of biographical entries of notable people in a particular field. The oldest and best-known is the annual publication ''Who's Who (UK), Who's Who'', a reference work on contemporary prominent people in Britain published annually since 1849. ''Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe'' (1985–87), usually referred to simply as ''Who's Who'', is the umbrella title for a number of comic book series which DC Comics published to catalogue the wide variety of fictional characters in their imaginary universe, the DC Universe. History ''Who's Who'' was the creation of Len Wein, Marv Wolfman, and Robert Greenberger, and its first incarnation (''Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe'') debuted in the last month of 1984 ( cover-dated March 1985) and ran for 26 issues until 1987 (cover-dated April 1987). It was essentially an encyclopedia in comic book form, listing the characters, places, and technology in the DC Universe, with a loose leaf format devised by editor Michael Eury. ''Who's Who in CIA'' is a book written by the East German journalist Julius Mader (also known as Thomas Bergner) and self-published in East Berlin in 1968. It was titled as ''Who's who in CIA; ein biographisches Nachschlagewerk über 3000 Mitarbeiter der zivilen und militärischen Geheimedienstzweige der USA in 120 Staaten'' (German) and ''Who's who in CIA; a biographical reference work on 3,000 officers of the civil and military branches of the secret services of the USA in 120 countries'' (English). Mader was employed by the East German military publishing house Die Wirtschaft, and apparently wrote the book while working closely with Stasi and probably with KGB assistance. The book purported to identify about 3,000 active agents of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, and has been described as an "active measure" of disinformation whose intent was to discredit both correctly and incorrectly identified individuals. The Main Directorate for Reconnaissance (; , ) was the foreign intelligence service of the Ministry of State Security (''Stasi''), the main security agency of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), from 1955 to 1990. East Berlin
East Berlin (; ) was the partially recognised capital city, capital of East Germany (GDR) from 1949 to 1990. ''Who's Who Among American High School Students'' was a ''Who's Who''-style web site and publication owned and managed by Educational Communications Inc. that listed what it claimed were high school students "who have excelled in academics, extracurricular activities and community service." The website shut down in November 2007 due to the bankruptcy of its parent firm. About ''Who's Who Among American High School Students'' compiled and published an annual edition in which students' names and achievements are listed. According to the website, people who accept nomination for inclusion in the book are sometimes qualified for various scholarship opportunities. ''Hvem er hvem?'' () was a Norwegian book series, presenting facts about notable persons from Norway. The first edition was issued in 1912, and the 14th edition came in 1994. From 1938, the plan was to publish such a book every three years, but the Second World War made that impossible. At the time, such a book was published annually in Denmark and every two years in Sweden. In the 2008 edition, edited by Knut Olav Åmås, one thousand persons were selected for presentation. About one third of the articles are longer, signed biographies, while the rest have a shorter, more encyclopedic format. The latest edition was edited by Knut Olav Åmås and narrowed down to 1,000 people. This differs from the older ones in style in that the articles are in a more journalistic style with personal characteristics, in addition to the purely biographical year information.
