White House Rose Garden
The White House Rose Garden is a garden bordering the Oval Office and the West Wing of the White House in Washington, D.C., United States. The garden is approximately 125 feet long and 60 feet wide ( by , or about 684m2). It balances the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden on the east side of the White House Complex and is adjacent to the South Lawn. It is commonly used as a stage for receptions and media events due to its proximity to the White House. Rosa 'Nevada'
''Rosa'' 'Nevada' is a white climbing rose cultivar developed by Pedro Dot in Spain in 1927. It is one of his most successful creations and is named for its colour, as ''nevada'' is the Spanish word for "snowy". Its parentage was long under discussion, as Dot introduced the cultivar as a hybrid moyesii, but the cultivar's round, black hips point to its ''R. pimpinellifolia''-parentage. It is probably a cross between Dot's pink hybrid tea 'La Giralda' (introduced in 1926) and the wild rose species ''Rosa pimpinellifolia'' var. ''altaica'' (synonym ''R.'' ''Rosa'' 'King's Ransom' is a deep yellow hybrid tea rose cultivar, developed by American hybridizer Dr. Dennison Morey in 1961. The rose was named an All-America Rose Selections winner in 1962. Irvin Williams
Irvin Williams (March 18, 1926 – November 7, 2018) was an American gardener who was the longest serving White House head gardener, serving from 1962 to 2008. He was a key figure in the design of the White House Rose Garden. Career Williams began working as a government horticulturist during the Truman Administration and worked on a variety of projects, including many at the White House. He was made head gardener of the White House in 1962 and was almost immediately assigned to work on a redesign of the Rose Garden with Bunny Mellon, which had been requested by president John F. Kennedy. After Kennedy's assassination in 1963, Lady Bird Johnson directed them to continue the redesign, a process that was finished in 1965. The Tidal Basin is a man-made reservoir located between the Potomac River and the Washington Channel in Washington, D.C.
