''Whips and Roses'' is a collection of previously unreleased material from the 1975 rock album ''Teaser'' by Tommy Bolin. Released on April 25, 2006, it features newly discovered takes from songs found on ''Teaser'' as well as several instrumental jams heard for the first time on this album. Songs Previously released Several songs on ''Whips and Roses'' were originally released on the album ''Teaser''. These versions are remixed from alternate takes remaining from the ''Teaser'' sessions. Many of these new renditions feature extended arrangements and radically alternate guitar solos from the original album. Tommy Bolin
Thomas Richard Bolin (August 1, 1951 – December 4, 1976) was an American guitarist and songwriter who played with Zephyr (from 1969 to 1971), The James Gang (from 1973 to 1974), and Deep Purple (from 1975 to 1976), in addition to maintaining a notable career as a solo artist and session musician. Musical career Early years Tommy Bolin was born in Sioux City, Iowa, United States, and began playing with a band called The Miserlous before he was asked to join another band called Denny and The Triumphs in 1964 at age 13. The band included Dave Stokes on lead vocals, Brad Miller on guitar and vocals, Bolin on lead guitar, Steve Bridenbaugh on organ and vocals, Denny Foote on bass, and Brad Larvick on drums. Greg Hampton is an American record producer, guitarist, singer, and songwriter, who has worked on such albums as Alice Cooper's '' Along Came a Spider,'' Tommy Bolin's ''Whips and Roses,'' Lita Ford's '' Wicked Wonderland'', and Eli Cook‘s ''Primitive Son''. A whip is a tool or weapon designed to strike humans or other animals to exert control through pain compliance or fear of pain. They can also be used without inflicting pain, for audiovisual cues, such as in equestrianism. They are generally either a firm stick designed for direct contact, or a flexible line requiring a specialized swing. Background ''Teaser'' was released in conjunction with the album ''Come Taste the Band'' by Deep Purple, on which Bolin also played guitar. The material spans hard rock, blues rock, jazz, reggae and Latin music, often blending these styles together within a single song. Weather Report was an American jazz fusion band active from 1970 to 1986. The band was founded in 1970 by Austrian virtuoso keyboardist Joe Zawinul, American saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Czech bassist Miroslav Vitouš, American drummer and vocalist Alphonse Mouzon as well as American percussionists Don Alias and Barbara Burton. Mysterious Traveller
''Mysterious Traveller'' is the fourth studio album by the jazz ensemble Weather Report and was released in 1974. This was their final recording with founding bassist Miroslav Vitouš, who left due to creative differences. Vitouš was replaced by Alphonso Johnson. Another addition to the line-up is drummer Ishmael Wilburn. Greg Errico was the drummer for the tour between the previously released '' Sweetnighter'' and this album, but declined an invitation to be a permanent member of the band. The record is the band's first that predominantly uses electric bass and incorporates liberal uses of funk, R&B grooves, and rock that would later be hallmarked as the band's "signature" sound. Also, the more restricted compositional format became evident on this album, replacing the more "open improvisation" formats used on the first three albums.
