''What a Wife Learned'' is a 1923 American drama film directed by John Griffith Wray and starring John Bowers, Milton Sills, Marguerite De La Motte, Evelyn McCoy, Harry Todd, and Aggie Herring. Written by Bradley King, the film was released on January 28, 1923, by Associated First National Pictures. Plot As described in a film magazine, Sheila Dorne (De La Motte) fears that marriage would interfere with the literary career that she plans for herself, but nonetheless yields to her love for Jim Russell (Bowers) and weds him. Jim is a cattle rancher and man of dominant personality. Sheila scores a success with her first novel and it is dramatized. This work compels her to visit New York City and, although Jim's love for her is undiminished, it becomes evident that he is not happy with the turn things have taken. John Griffith Wray
John Griffith Wray (August 30, 1881 – July 15, 1929) was an American stage actor and director who later became a noted Hollywood silent film director. He worked on 19 films between 1913 and 1929 that included ''Anna Christie'' (1923) and '' Human Wreckage'' (1923), Dorothy Davenport's story about her husband Wallace Reid's drug addiction and death. Biography Wray was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and died in Los Angeles, California. By 1912 Wray was a leading actor and stage director with the World's Fair Stock Company's yearlong Hawaiian tour. He married actress Virginia Brissac in Santa Ana, California, on June 29, 1915, and became the step-father of screenwriter Ardel Wray. The couple divorced in 1927. Francelia Billington
Francelia Billington (February 1, 1895 – November 24, 1934) was an early American silent-screen actress, and an accomplished camera operator. Early life On February 1, 1895, Billington was born in Dallas, Texas, the daughter of James Billington and his wife, Adelaide Bueter. At age 10, she moved to Los Angeles, where she attended Sacred Heart Convent. Career She began working in films for the Kalem Company, Kalem Company's West Coast studio in 1912, then moved to Reliance-Majestic Studios the following year, and she continued starring in films under its banner when D.W. Griffith became the studio's director-general. Billington made ''The Half Breed'' with Jack Pickford in 1913. The production was filmed at the Majestic Studio on Boyle Heights. John Steppling (actor)
John Steppling (8 August 1870 in Essen, Germany – 5 April 1932 in Hollywood, California) was a German-American silent film actor. He moved to America at a young age and entered film in 1912 aged 42. He starred in a total of 230 films between then and 1928, beginning with one of the first feature films ever made, ''Tess of the d'Urbervilles''. He is also credited with directing 7 films. He is the grandfather of playwright John Steppling.
