''What a Long Strange Trip It's Been'' is the second compilation album by American rock band Grateful Dead. It was released August 18, 1977, by Warner Bros. Records, three and a half years after the '' Skeletons from the Closet'' compilation. Both albums are subtitled "The Best of the Grateful Dead". Unlike the previous compilation, ''What a Long Strange Trip It's Been'' is a double album. Content After the Grateful Dead had completed their contract with Warner Bros. and begun self-releasing their recordings, the label released ''Skeletons from the Closet''. The compilation of tracks from their back catalog was successful, and when the band moved onto Arista Records in 1977 to record ''Terrapin Station'', Warner Bros. released a second, larger compilation of tracks from the 1967–1972 period. Richard Alden "Rick" Griffin (June 18, 1944 – August 18, 1991) was an American artist and one of the leading designers of psychedelic posters in the 1960s. He was a key figure in the underground comix movement as a fouding member of the ''Zap Comix'' collective. Griffin was closely identified with the Grateful Dead, designing some of their best-known posters and album covers including '' Aoxomoxoa''. "Born Cross-Eyed" is an original composition by the San Francisco Psychedelic music, psychedelic rock music, rock group Grateful Dead. It was written by rhythm guitarist Bob Weir during the band's sessions creating the album ''Anthem of the Sun'', produced by David Hassinger, in 1968. It was released as a B-side with the single "Dark Star (song), Dark Star", one of the band's best-known musical excursions. The single was first released in April 1968 by Warner Bros. Records and is a different mix than the version included on the ''Anthem of the Sun'' album. The single was re-released in the United Kingdom in 1977 as a promotion distributed with the Dark Star magazine. The single release included lyrics of "Dark Star" on the back cover. ''American Beauty'' is the fifth studio album (and sixth overall) by American rock band the Grateful Dead. Released in November 1970, by Warner Bros. Records, the album continued the folk rock and country music style of their previous album '' Workingman's Dead'', released earlier in the year. Upon release, ''American Beauty'' entered the ''Billboard'' 200 chart, ultimately peaking at number 30 during a nineteen-week stay in January 1971. Robert Hall Weir ( ; né Parber, born October 16, 1947) is an American musician and songwriter best known as a founding member of the Grateful Dead. After the group disbanded in 1995, Weir performed with the Other Ones, later known as the Dead, together with other former members of the Grateful Dead. Phil Lesh
Philip Chapman Lesh (March 15, 1940 – October 25, 2024) was an American musician and a founding member of the Grateful Dead, with whom he developed a unique style of improvised six-string bass guitar. He was their bassist throughout their 30-year career. After the group disbanded in 1995, Lesh continued the tradition of Grateful Dead family music with a side project, Phil Lesh and Friends, which paid homage to the Dead's music by playing their repertoire, as well as songs by members of his own group. Robert Hunter (lyricist)
Robert C. Christie Hunter (born Robert Burns; June 23, 1941 – September 23, 2019) was an American lyricist, singer-songwriter, translator and poet, best known for his work with the Grateful Dead. Born near San Luis Obispo, California, Hunter spent some time during his childhood in foster homes as a result of his father abandoning his family, and took refuge in reading and writing. He attended the University of Connecticut for a year before returning to Palo Alto, California, Palo Alto, where he became friends with musician Jerry Garcia. Hunter and Garcia began a collaboration that lasted through the remainder of Garcia's life. Garcia and others formed the Grateful Dead in 1965, and later began working with lyrics from Hunter, whom Garcia invited to join the band as a lyricist.
