''What Every Woman Wants'' is a 1954 British comedy film directed by Maurice Elvey and starring William Sylvester, Elsie Albiin, Brenda De Banzie and Patric Doonan, as well as featuring Brian Rix and Prunella Scales. It was based on a play ''Relations Are Best Apart'' by Edwin Lewis and was shot at Walton Studios outside London. The film's sets were designed by the art director John Stoll. Plot A newly married couple have to live with the wife's parents and extended family in a small overcrowded house in the English Midlands. Maurice Elvey
Maurice Elvey (11 November 1887 – 28 August 1967) was one of the most prolific film directors in British history. He directed nearly 200 films between 1913 and 1957. During the silent film era he directed as many as twenty films per year. He also produced more than fifty films – his own as well as films directed by others. Biography Born William Seward Folkard in Stockton-on-Tees, he ran away from home at the age of nine, seeking his fortune in London. There he worked variously as a kitchen hand and hotel pageboy, before ending up as stagehand and actor at the age of 17. He quickly rose to directing and producing plays and established his own theatrical company before switching to films with ''The Great Gold Robbery'' in 1913. Brian Rix
Brian Norman Roger Rix, Baron Rix (27 January 1924 – 20 August 2016) was an English actor-manager, who produced a record-breaking sequence of long-running farces on the London stage, including ''Dry Rot'', '' Simple Spymen'' and ''One for the Pot''. His one-night TV shows made him the joint highest paid star on the BBC. He often worked with his wife Elspet Gray and sister Sheila Mercier, who became the matriarch in '' Emmerdale Farm''. After his first child was born with Down syndrome, Rix became a campaigner for disability causes, among others.
