Whale Riding Weather
''Whale Riding Weather'' is a play by Canadian playwright Bryden MacDonald. It is written for three male actors. The characters are Lyle, a bitter aged queen in a downward spiral, Auto, Lyle's younger lover, and Jude, a man younger still that Auto has just met. Synopsis A fading old queen finds his life ebbing away from him, as his younger lover also slips away with a new, even younger man. Production history The play premiered at Factory Theatre in Toronto in 1991, and has been produced at Neptune Theatre (Halifax), Touchstone Theatre in Vancouver, Plutonium Playhouse in Halifax. Talonbooks published the script in 1994. Neptune Theatre (Halifax)
The Neptune Theatre is the largest professional theatre company in Atlantic Canada with a capacity of 458 and is located in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It performs a mixture of new and classical plays. It is named after the play Théâtre de Neptune, which was performed at Port Royal, Nova Scotia as the first theatrical production in North America. The Neptune was originally opened on the site of a former cinema in 1963 during Canada's drive to create regional theatres. Its first Artistic Director was Leon Major, later to become the Artistic Director of Boston Lyric Opera and Cleveland Opera. Its first President of the Board was local surgeon and CBC writer Dr. Arthur L. Murphy. The building was renovated in 1997 and now has two theatres and incorporates a theatre school. The Plutonium Playhouse is a theatre company in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada that began as a non-profit society in 2010. Plutonium Playhouse Society initially mounted shows in a recording studio on Hunter Street in Halifax. Plutonium is known for its development and encouragement of new work by Nova Scotia playwrights like Thom Fitzgerald, Lee-Anne Poole, Ryan Doucette, and Stewart Legere. A number of works originally presented by Plutonium Playhouse have gone on to tours and remounts across Canada, including Short Skirt Butch, The Debacle, El Camino or the Field of Stars, and Cloudburst, which was made into a popular movie starring Academy Award winners Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker and Ryan Doucette, and won over thirty film festival best picture awards.
