WERD (Atlanta)
WERD was the first radio station owned and programmed by African Americans. The station was established in Atlanta, Georgia on October 3, 1949, broadcasting on 860 AM (now used by WAEC). The National Black Radio Hall of Fame Atlanta Chapter is reopening WERD which still exists at its birth location and will also include a historical museum with it after renovations of the facility are completed. WERD in Atlanta was the first radio station owned and operated by African Americans. (WDIA in Memphis was on the air in 1948 doing black—or Negro as it was then called—programming, but the owners were not African American). Jesse B. Blayton Sr., an accountant, bank president, and Atlanta University professor, purchased WERD in 1949 for $50,000. He changed the station format to " black appeal" and hired his son Jesse Jr. as station manager. "Jockey" Jack Gibson was hired and by 1951 he was the most popular DJ in Atlanta. WZAZ
WZAZ (1400 AM) is a radio station in Jacksonville, Florida, which carries a gospel music format. It is owned by Titus Harvest Dome Spectrum Church, Inc. The station went on the air in 1950 and has spent most of its history serving the Black community in Jacksonville. History Bert Richmond and Harold Cohn applied to the Federal Communications Commission on July 8, 1946, for a new radio station to serve Jacksonville on 1400 kHz dependent on WMBR vacating the frequency. The commission granted the application on August 18, 1949. WRHC went on the air on July 4, 1950. Cohn later was also part of an application consortium for television channel 12 in Jacksonville. WRHC became one of Jacksonville's main Black radio stations. One on-air personality was Ken Knight, who hosted the "Knight Train" show and also served as station vice president; Knight was the first Black person to produce a TV show in the city. WCFO
WCFO (1160 kHz) is a listener-supported AM radio station, licensed to East Point, Georgia. It airs a Catholic radio format and is owned by Atlanta Catholic Radio. Most of the programming comes from the EWTN Radio Network. It is one of two Catholic stations in the Atlanta metropolitan area. WAFS 1190 AM carries programming from the Relevant Radio Network. By day, WCFO broadcasts at 50,000 watts, the maximum power for AM radio stations in the U.S. But because AM 1160 is a clear channel frequency reserved for Class A KSL in Salt Lake City, WCFO must reduce power at night to 160 watts to avoid interference with KSL and other pre-existing stations. WCFO uses a directional antenna in the daytime. The four-tower array transmitter site is off Arnold Drive in Austell, Georgia. History Early years The 1160 frequency in the Atlanta radio market has had a difficult history. Founder Darryl Spann, an Atlanta businessman, originally got a construction permit from the Federal Com ...
