''Welcoming the Icon'' (Russian language, Russian: Встреча иконы) is a painting by Russian artist Konstantin Savitsky (1844–1905), which was completed in 1878. It is stored in the Tretyakov Gallery, State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow (Inventory No. 591). The size of the painting is 141 × 228 cm. This painting is a multi-figure genre canvas that represents an episode of peasant life and was painted during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. Konstantin Savitsky
Konstantin Apollonovich Savitsky (; 25 May 1844 — 31 January 1905) was a Russian Realism (art movement), realist painter born in the city of Taganrog in the village Frankovka or Baronovka, named after former governor Otto Pfeilizer-Frank. Today this area is occupied by the Taganrog Iron and Steel Factory TAGMET. Early life Savitsky's family lived in the building of the Chekhov Gymnasium, Taganrog Gymnasium for Boys, where his father worked as a doctor. In Frankovka the family rented a summer house. Savitsky spent his childhood and youth in Taganrog. He showed an interest for painting in early childhood. Being on the shore of Azov Sea with his parents, he loved to make sketches, and drawing lessons at the Gymnasium were his favorite subject. In art, a study is a drawing, Sketch (drawing), sketch or painting done in preparation for a finished piece, as visual notetaking, notes, or as practice. Studies are often used to understand the problems involved in rendering subjects and to plan the elements to be used in finished works, such as light, color, form, perspective (graphical), perspective and composition. ''To War'' is a painting by the Russian artist Konstantin Savitsky (1844–1905), completed in 1888. It belongs to the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg (Inventory No. Zh-4228). The dimensions of the canvas are 207.5 × 303.5 cm. Alternative titles are also used, including ''Sending Recruits Off to War'' and ''Seeing Off to War''. The narrative revolves around the scene of soldiers going off to war, parting with their loved ones. It takes place during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. Savitsky commenced work on the painting, entitled ''To War'', during the second half of the 1870s. The initial version of the painting, completed in 1880, was exhibited at the 8th exhibition of the Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions (Peredvizhniki).
