Sydney To Hobart Yacht Race Waterspout
The south coast tornado was a tornadic waterspout spawned by a supercell thunderstorm off the south coast of New South Wales on 26 December 2001, during the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. The tornado passed very close to the yacht '' Nicorette II'', which was severely damaged but able to complete the race with a spare mainsail. ''Nicorette'' recorded wind speeds of close to (making the tornado at least F2 on the Fujita scale) and was struck by hail Hail is a form of solid precipitation. It is distinct from ice pellets (American English "sleet"), though the two are often confused. It consists of balls or irregular lumps of ice, each of which is called a hailstone. Ice pellets generally fal ... the size of golf balls. According to the boat's meteorologist, the tornado began with a diameter of around , but grew in size until it was across. The waterspout proceeded to strike several other boats with weaker winds. The tornado should not be confused with the severe storm tha ... Bucca Tornado
The Bucca tornado was one of the most violent tornadoes ever observed in Australia, being the first Australian tornado to be officially rated F4 on the Fujita scale. It occurred near the township of Bucca (near Bundaberg) in Queensland on 29 November 1992 at around 2:20pm AEST. The tornado was accompanied by cricket-ball sized hail across Bucca and Bullyard regions. The tornado damaged or destroyed nine houses, some flattened to the ground. Trees were snapped and stones were found embedded into tree trunks. Several tree saplings were speared into the walls of homes. A refrigerator from one home was blown away and never found. A 3-ton truck was also thrown and approximately 20 cattle were killed. Jeff Callaghan, a retired senior severe weather forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology said “the Bucca tornado was rated a F4 or possibly an F5.” Although the most violent Australian tornado with an official rating, the tornado did not kill or seriously injure anyone.https://archiv ... Bulahdelah Tornado
The Bulahdelah Tornado was an intense tornado which occurred near the town of Bulahdelah ( north-northeast of Newcastle), New South Wales on 1 January 1970, and is thought to be the most destructive tornado ever documented in Australia, however, no official rating has been made public. The tornado left a damage path long and wide through the Bulahdelah State Forest. It is estimated that the tornado destroyed over one million trees. A caravan was destroyed and a 2-tonne (2,000 kg) tractor was lifted into the air, landing upside down. The tornado was reported by witnesses as a swirling black cloud surrounded by flying debris, and producing a thunderous roaring sound. The weather system that produced the tornado was a classic set-up for violent tornadoes, something somewhat rarely seen outside of the United States, Canada, Argentina, Bangladesh, and adjacent areas of India. Brighton Tornado
The Brighton tornado is the strongest storm recorded in Melbourne to date. On the afternoon of 2 February 1918, with prevailing north-westerly winds and a heat wave (typical conditions for Melbourne thunderstorms). After a severe storm formed and moved off Port Phillip, two tornadoes struck Brighton, Victoria, Brighton beach simultaneously at approximately 5:45 pm and proceeded inland, converging near the junction of Halifax and Church Streets. Five minutes later, a third tornado struck. The tornadoes then tracked east over open fields. Damage retrospectively rated F3 on the Fujita scale was observed in places. Two people were killed, a man and a boy, while the drowning of a woman at St Kilda, Victoria, St Kilda beach is believed to be related to the same storm cell.pg 3. 2010 Victorian Storms
The 2010 Victorian storms were a series of storms that passed through much of the Australian state of Victoria (Australia), Victoria on 6 and 7 March 2010. One of the most severe storms passed directly over Greater Melbourne, bringing lightning, flash flooding, very large hail and strong winds to the state's capital. The larger of the storms brought heavy rain and large hail, which led to flash flooding, disrupting transport in central Melbourne and central Victoria throughout the weekend. Many residential buildings were damaged, most due to hail and heavy rain. Some major buildings were evacuated including Flinders Street railway station, Flinders Street and Southern Cross railway station, Southern Cross stations, several major shopping centres, civic buildings and Docklands Stadium. The storms occurred during the Victorian Labour Day long weekend and affected a number of sporting events and festivals, many of which were postponed or cancelled. 1992 Queensland Storms
A series of destructive severe thunderstorms struck southeastern Queensland, Australia, on 29 November 1992. The storms produced strong winds, flash flooding and large hailstones in the region, including the capital city of Brisbane. The storms also spawned two of the most powerful tornadoes recorded in Australia, including the only Australian tornado to be given an official 'F4' classification on the Fujita scale and the last violent tornado in Australia until 21 March 2013. The meteorological instability in the region resulted in the formation of at least five supercell thunderstorms in the space of around three hours. The storms, which spawned progressively further up the coast from Brisbane to Gladstone as the afternoon progressed, left a trail of damage resulting from hail, rain and wind. The event has been described as ''"one of the most widespread outbreaks of severe thunderstorms recorded"'' by veteran meteorologist Richard Whitaker. Climatology and conditions ... The 2018 Broome flood was a severe flood that occurred in January and February 2018 in and around Broome in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The flooding was triggered following record breaking rainfall. Broome received of rainfall in the first two months of 2018, the equivalent of two years worth. The rainfall was caused by Cyclone Joyce, which struck Broome on 12 January 2018. Another tropical low struck the area two weeks later, which delivered further rains. Cyclone Kelvin then hit on 16 February. Dampier Creek and other waterways burst their banks and inundated low-lying areas. The town became isolated when the Great Northern Highway was cut to the south and east of the town. Some residents of surrounding areas had to be evacuated and supplies had to be air dropped to isolated communities.
