We Are The One
''We Are the One'' is the first EP by the Avengers. It was released on Dangerhouse Records in 1977. It is sometimes known as the Dangerhouse EP, referring to the label that released it. It was recorded in October 1977 at Kitchen Sink Studio. The release had two different covers, with the first pressing having the "crucifixion" cover, while later pressings had the "target" cover. All of its songs are on the 1983 album ''Avengers''. The single was re-released on Frontier Records. The single was also included on ''Dangerhouse Volume One''. The EP marked the first time that a West Coast punk band had issued music on an independent label. Critical reception ''The Rough Guide to Rock'' called the songs "defiant anthems of self-realization." Robert Christgau considered "We Are the One" to be the "finest U.S. indie single of 1977." Avengers (band)
The Avengers are an American punk rock band formed in 1977 in San Francisco. The band recorded an EP, '' We Are the One'' (1977) and, after opening for the Sex Pistols, worked with Steve Jones, but had not released an album before breaking up in 1979. After the breakup an EP with the Steve Jones-produced songs was released (''The Avengers''), and later an album, ''Avengers'', in 1983. Their lead singer, Penelope Houston, is also a folk singer who has a solo career. Since 1999 a number of other albums were released with studio and live tracks, and the band has come together for various occasions. Punk Rock
Punk rock (also known as simply punk) is a rock music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s. Extended Play
An extended play (EP) is a Sound recording and reproduction, musical recording that contains more tracks than a Single (music), single but fewer than an album. Contemporary EPs generally contain up to eight tracks and have a playing time of 15 to 30 minutes. An EP is usually less cohesive than an album and more "non-committal". An extended play (EP) originally referred to a specific type of 45 revolutions per minute, rpm phonograph record other than 78 rpm standard play (SP) and 33 rpm LP record, long play (LP), but , also applies to mid-length Compact disc, CDs and Music download, downloads. Crucifixion is a method of capital punishment in which the condemned is tied or nailed to a large wooden cross, beam or stake and left to hang until eventual death. Avengers (album)
''Avengers'' is a compilation album by the American punk group Avengers. It was released on vinyl in 1983 by CD Presents. It is the closest thing to a studio album the band has, although it was compiled by drummer Danny Furious from various recordings the band did in their three years of existence. The album includes some songs previously released, including all of the songs from the '' We Are the One'' EP, two songs from the ''Avengers'' EP (as well as other songs recorded during the EP's sessions) and both songs from the "Paint it Black" single. Re-releases The album has been re-released multiple times over the years. The first re-release came when the album was first released on cassette by CD Presents with two more tracks; the 1989 release on CD included the same bonus tracks. Frontier Records
Frontier Records is an independent record label, started in 1980 in Sun Valley, Los Angeles by Lisa Fancher, a former employee of BOMP! Records and writer of the liner notes for the first album by The Runaways. History Frontier Records first found success with the release of the Circle Jerks album ''Group Sex''. The label went on to put out records by such bands as Suicidal Tendencies, American Music Club, Heatmiser, Redd Kross, Thin White Rope, T.S.O.L., Christian Death, and the Young Fresh Fellows, among others. On November 7, 2010, Frontier Records hosted a party for their 30th anniversary at the Echoplex in Los Angeles which featured a reunion by seminal punk band Middle Class, their first performance in nearly 30 years. ''Trouser Press'' was a rock and roll magazine started in New York in 1974 as a mimeographed fanzine by editor/publisher Ira Robbins, fellow fan of the Who, Dave Schulps, and Karen Rose under the name "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press" (a reference to a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and an acronymic play on the British TV show ''Top of the Pops)''. Penelope Houston
Penelope Houston (born December 17, 1958) is an American singer-songwriter best known as the singer for the San Francisco-based punk rock band the Avengers. She was raised in Seattle. In the mid-1970s she attended Fairhaven College in Bellingham, Washington. In 1977, Houston moved to San Francisco, attended the San Francisco Art Institute, and shortly after became the lead singer and songwriter for the Avengers. That band released one album, their eponymous debut in 1983. Following the group's demise in 1979, Houston moved first to Los Angeles to work in film and video with The Screamers and director Rene Daalder, then to England where she collaborated with Howard Devoto on his post-Magazine projects. In the mid-1980s, she returned to San Francisco and helped originate the West Coast neo-folk movement.
