Watson-Guptill
Watson-Guptill is an American publisher of instructional books in the arts. History The company was founded in 1937 by Ernest William Watson, Ralph Reinhold, and Arthur L. Guptill. They also published the magazine ''American Artist''. Their headquarters are at 1745 Broadway, New York City, Random House Tower. Billboard (magazine), Billboard Publications acquired Watson-Guptill in 1962. The Dutch publisher Verenigde Nederlandse Uitgeverijen, VNU (later renamed the Nielsen Company) acquired Billboard in 1993. Random House acquired Watson-Guptill from Nielsen in 2008. Five years later, Random House, which was owned by Bertelsmann and the Penguin Group, owned by Pearson PLC, merged to form the Penguin Random House company. Watson-Guptill became an imprint of Ten Speed Press in 2013. Ten Speed Press
Ten Speed Press is a publishing house founded in Berkeley, California, in 1971 by Phil Wood. It was bought by Random House in February 2009 and became part of their Crown Publishing Group division. History Wood worked with Barnes & Noble in 1962, Penguin Books in 1965, and had a senior sales position at Penguin Books in Baltimore and New York before founding Ten Speed Press. Wood died of cancer in December 2010. Ten Speed's first book was ''Anybody's Bike Book'', which is still in print. It inspired the publisher's name and has sold more than a million copies. Ten Speed's all-time best-seller is '' What Color is Your Parachute? A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers'' by Richard N. Bolles (1972). It has been reissued in new editions and, as of 2009, has sold more than ten million copies, translated into 20 languages. Ernest William Watson
Ernest William Watson (January 14, 1884, Conway, Massachusetts – January 23, 1969, New Rochelle, New York) was an American painter, illustrator and writer. Biography He graduated from the Massachusetts Normal School of Art in Boston in 1906, and received his teacher-education degree the following year from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where he later taught, in 1907. In 1911, he married one of his students, Eva Auld. They had two sons, Lyn (Merlin) Auld Watson and painter Aldren Auld Watson (1917–2013). Watson married for a second time in New York City, in April 1949, to Eve Brian. In 1915, Watson co-founded the Berkshire Summer School of Art in Monterey, Massachusetts, where he remained active in teaching summer sessions until 1927.
