Walt Stack (guitar Player)
Walt Stack (September 28, 1908 – January 19, 1995) was a hod carrier by trade and an icon of the San Francisco, California running community. Stack ran approximately in his lifetime. Even in his 70s and 80s, Stack ran many more marathons and ultramarathons than all but a few of his running peers. Stack was featured in Nike's first "Just Do It" advertisement that debuted on July 1, 1988, when he was still running at 80 years of age. Early life Walter stack was born in 1908 and grew up in poverty. As a teenager, he lied about his age to join the US Army. After being discharged in 1926, Stack began sailing from Baltimore, Maryland, and became radicalized. He was a member of the Industrial Workers of the World from 1927-1931. Pikes Peak Marathon
The Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon is a trail running competition that begins at the base of Pikes Peak, in Manitou Springs, Colorado, and climbs over 7,815 feet (2382 m) to the top of the 14,115 foot (4302 m) peak. Since 1956, the event takes place each year in late summer, with the Ascent taking place on Saturday (slightly longer than a half-marathon, at 13.3 miles), and the round-trip marathon on Sunday. Fisherman's Wharf is a neighborhood and popular tourist attraction in San Francisco, California. Double Dipsea
The Dipsea Race is a trail running event in California, United States. It is the oldest cross-country trail running event and one of the oldest foot races of any kind—in the United States. The 7.5 mile (12 km) long Dipsea Race has been held annually almost every year since November 19, 1905, starting in Mill Valley, and finishing at Stinson Beach, in Marin County. Running Club
A running club, also known in some parts of the United States as a running crew , is an eclectic institution specialising in running and oriented towards the sport and recreation of running or track and field. The club may train for and compete in Cross country running, cross country, road running, fell running, track and field some clubs even branch out into multi discipline sports such as triathlon. Since the early 2000s, alternative running clubs or crews have emerged and they differ from traditional running clubs as the focus is on urban running on city streets. One of the crews widely considered to be the first is the Bridge Runners formed by Mike Saes in New York City in 2004. South End Rowing Club is an athletic club and social club in San Francisco, California. The South End Rowing Club, founded in 1873, is one of the oldest athletics clubs in the western United States. The boathouse, with a fleet of 30 boats, is located in San Francisco, California, at 500 Jefferson Street near Fisherman's Wharf, adjacent to the San Francisco Aquatic Park.
