Walls Of Jericho (album)
''Walls of Jericho'' is the debut studio album by German power metal band Helloween, released in 1985 on LP by Noise Records. It is the band's only album featuring Kai Hansen as lead vocalist until 2021's ''Helloween'', although he would continue to act as guitarist on the two following albums. In 1988, ''Walls of Jericho'' was released on CD. Due to the enhanced capacity of the CD, the ''Helloween'' EP/mini-LP and the song "Judas" from the ''Judas'' EP were added to the ''Walls of Jericho'' track listing; they are now released as a compilation. In the late 1980s, due to a manufacturing error, side one of several cassette copies of ''Walls of Jericho'' accidentally contained the music of Celtic Frost's '' To Mega Therion'', confusing many first-time Helloween listeners. Helloween
Helloween is a German power metal band founded in 1984 in Hamburg by members of bands Iron Fist, Gentry, Second Hell and Powerfool. The band has at times been called one of the most influential European heavy metal bands of the 1980s. Its first lineup consisted of singer and guitarist Kai Hansen, bassist Markus Grosskopf, guitarist Michael Weikath and drummer Ingo Schwichtenberg. By the time Hansen left Helloween in 1989 to form Gamma Ray (band), Gamma Ray, the band had evolved into a five-piece, with Michael Kiske taking over as lead vocalist. Schwichtenberg and Kiske both parted ways with Helloween in 1993; Schwichtenberg died two years later as the result of suicide. Between then and 2016, there had been numerous line-up changes, leaving Grosskopf and Weikath as the only remaining original members. "In the Hall of the Mountain King" () is a piece of orchestral music composed by Edvard Grieg in 1875 as incidental music for the sixth scene of act 2 in Henrik Ibsen's 1867 play ''Peer Gynt''. It was originally part of Opus 23 but was later extracted as the final piece of ''Peer Gynt'', Suite No. 1, Op. 46. Its easily recognizable theme has helped it attain iconic status in popular culture, where it has been arranged by many artists (see Grieg's music in popular culture). The English translation of the name is not literal. Dovre is a mountainous region in Norway, and "gubbe" translates into (old) man or husband. "Gubbe" is used along with its female counterpart "kjerring" to differentiate male and female trolls, "trollgubbe" and "trollkjerring". Edvard Hagerup Grieg ( , ; 15 June 18434 September 1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist. ''Gorgar'' is a 1979 pinball machine designed by Barry Oursler and released by WMS Industries, Williams Electronics. It was the first speech synthesis, speech-synthesized ("talking") pinball machine, containing a vocabulary of seven words ("Gorgar", "speaks", "beat", "you", "me", "hurt", "got") that were combined to form varying broken-English phrases, such as "Gorgar speaks" and "Me got you". The pinball machine also has a heartbeat sound effect that increases in speed during longer gameplay. The Emulator is a series of digital sampling synthesizers using floppy-disk storage that was manufactured by E-mu Systems from 1981 until 2002. Although it was not the first commercial sampler, the Emulator was innovative in its integration of computer technology and was among the first samplers to find widespread usage among musicians. While costly, its price was considerably lower than those of its early competitors, and its smaller size increased its portability and, resultantly, practicality for live performance. Ingo Schwichtenberg
Ingo "Mr. Smile" Schwichtenberg (18 May 1965 – 8 March 1995) was a German drummer and one of the founding members of the power metal band Helloween. Biography Helloween guitarist Roland Grapow said about Schwichtenberg in an interview 1999: The song " Step Out of Hell" from the Helloween album ''Chameleon'' is written by Roland Grapow about Schwichtenberg's problems with drug abuse. After a six-hour telephone call with Michael Weikath, in which he explained why they had made that hard and painful decision, Ingo was asked to leave Helloween after the album ''Chameleon''. Schwichtenberg was apparently somewhat dissatisfied with the direction of the band as well, even going as far as to refer to their song from the ''Chameleon'' album "Windmill", as "Shitmill". Markus Grosskopf
Markus Grosskopf (born 21 September 1965) is a German musician best known as the bass guitarist, backing vocalist and a founding member of the power metal band Helloween. Biography Grosskopf started playing bass at the age of 15 when he became friends with a drummer and a guitar player. They were looking for a bass player, so he bought his first bass and started jamming with covers of the Sex Pistols, Ramones, and the like. They covered songs from the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, Sid Vicious, XTC, The Stranglers, and others. Some time later, he decided to leave in hope of finding a heavier band with more live playing opportunities, then he met Kai Hansen and his band Second Hell, with whom he started playing. ''Death Metal'' is a 1984 split album by the heavy metal bands Helloween, Hellhammer, Running Wild, and Dark Avenger. It contains the only recorded material by the German group Dark Avenger besides their 1985 demo tape. Despite its name, the musical style is not actually death metal. The album offers a snapshot of the Central European metal scene during the end of the early 1980s. At that time, Running Wild were still in their "satanic" lyrical phase and had yet to develop their "pirate metal" focus. Helloween had more of a thrash or speed metal sound compared to the more melodic power metal style they would soon develop. ''Treasure Chest'' is a box set by German power metal band Helloween. Originally seen as quite the collection for fans/collectors worldwide the box consists of 2 discs compiling (and remastering) some of the finest works of their 1985-2000 albums as well as a third (bonus disc) featuring many rare B-sides from the band's past singles. Michael Kiske (born 24 January 1968) is a German singer who is the co-lead vocalist for the power metal band Helloween. Kiske has also released four solo albums, two albums with the hard rock band Unisonic (band), Unisonic, has participated on various metal and rock related projects such as Avantasia, Place Vendome (band), Place Vendome and Kiske/Somerville, and has performed with numerous bands as a guest vocalist.
