Wadani (political Party)
The Somaliland National Party (), sometimes referred to as the Waddani National Party and better known by its shortened Somali form Waddani (stylised in all caps), is a political party in Somaliland. The party was founded by Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro) in 2012, ahead of the second municipal elections later that year. On 16 November 2021 Hersi Ali Haji Hassan was elected as the new chairman of the opposition party. Economically the party leans left, defending the establishment of a universal healthcare system, public investment and doubling resources in education. It is progressive on issues regarding minority rights and fundamental freedoms, such as proposing a quorum of 30% of women in parliament. The party also supports greater decentralisation. Additionally, the party places great importance on Islamic moral and cultural heritage, and intends to give it a more important place in the education system and in the establishment of laws. 2012 Somaliland Municipal Elections
Municipal elections were held across Somaliland on 28 November 2012. Two of the existing parties, For Justice and Development and the Peace, Unity, and Development Party contested the elections alongside six newly registered political associations. Results Aftermath In accordance with the Constitution of Somaliland, only the top 3 parties in the election are made legal parties and allowed to contest elections for the next 10 years. The KULMIYE and UCID parties retained their party status first gained in 2002 and Waddani became the countries newest party, having come in second in the elections. For Justice And Development
The Justice and Welfare Party (, UCID; ), sometimes translated as the Justice and Welfare Association, and also known as For Justice and Development, was the oldest political party in Somaliland. The party tended to be supported by people from the Cidagale and Garxajis and some sub-clans of the Isaaq. UCID was founded in 2001 by Somaliland politician Faysal Ali Warabe, with its program being inspired by that of the Finnish Social Democratic Party. Waraabe also served as its Chairman. The party had been described as the only one at a national level that adhered to a specific political ideology. Faysal Ali Warabe ( ; , ; born 1948), also spelled Faisal Ali Warabe, is a Somaliland engineer and politician. He previously served as Director of Planning and Building as well as Regional Director of Somalia's Ministry of Public Works. Additionally, Warabe is the founder and chairman of the Justice and Welfare Party (UCID). Life and education Warabe was born in 1948 in Hargeisa, British Somaliland. He hails from the Eidagale clan of the Isaaq clan family. Faysal Ali completed his Primary, Intermediate and Secondary education in Somaliland. Musa Bihi Abdi (, ; born 16 June 1948) is a Somaliland politician and former military officer who served as the 5th President of Somaliland from 2017 to 2024. During the 1970s, he served as a pilot in the Somali Air Force under the Siad Barre administration. In 2010, Bihi was appointed the chairman of the ruling Kulmiye party in Somaliland. In November 2015, Bihi was selected as the party's Presidential Candidate at the 5th annual central committee convention. Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud (, ; 1 June 1938 – 15 November 2024), known by his nickname Silanyo (), was a Somaliland politician who served as the President of Somaliland from 2010 to 2017. During the 1980s, he also served as the Chairman of the Somali National Movement. Somali clans (; ) are patrilineal kinship groups based on agnatic descent of the Somali people. Tradition and folklore connects the origin of the Somali population by language and way of life, and societal organisations, by customs, and by a feeling of belonging to a broader family among individuals from the Arabian Peninsula. The Somalis are a Muslim ethnoreligious group native to the Horn of Africa.
