WZON (AM)
WZON (620 AM) is a radio station that is currently silent. The station is licensed to Bangor and serves Central Maine. Along with sister station 103.1 WZLO, WZON is owned by The Zone Corporation, the broadcast company owned by authors Tabitha King and her husband, best-selling horror writer Stephen King. WZON transmits with 5,000 watts, using a non-directional transmitter by day and a directional pattern at night to protect other stations on 620 kHz. WZON is one of Maine's oldest radio stations, first signing on the air in 1926 as WLBZ in Dover-Foxcroft. It moved to Bangor in 1928. The station became WACZ in 1981, and WZON after its purchase by Stephen King in 1983. King sold the station in 1990, but repurchased WZON out of bankruptcy in 1993. He closed the station and WZLO on December 31, 2024, due to ongoing financial losses; a sale of the two stations to Mix Maine Media is pending. Dark (broadcasting)
In broadcasting, a dark television station or silent radio station is one that has gone off the air for an indefinite period of time. Usually unlike dead air (broadcasting only silence), a station that is dark or silent does not even transmit a carrier signal. U.S. law Transmitter operations According to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), a radio or television station is considered to have gone dark or silent if it is to be off the air for thirty days or longer. Prior to the Telecommunications Act of 1996, a "dark" station was required to surrender its broadcast license to the FCC, leaving it vulnerable to another party applying for it while its current owner was making efforts to get it back on the air. WTOS (AM)
WTOS (910 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Bangor, Maine, United States. The station is owned by Blueberry Broadcasting. WTOS broadcasts a mainstream rock format, simulcast with WTOS-FM (105.1 FM) in Skowhegan and WTUX (101.1 FM) in Gouldsboro. WTOS's studios and offices are on Target Industrial Circle in Bangor. The transmitter is off Wilson Street in Brewer. The station broadcasts at 5,000 watts during the day. To protect other radio stations on AM 910 at night, it reduces power to 210 watts. WABI-TV (channel 5) is a television station in Bangor, Maine, United States, affiliated with CBS and The CW Plus. Owned by Gray Media, the station has studios on Hildreth Street in West Bangor, and its transmitter is atop Peaked Mountain in Dixmont. Prior to 2017, WABI-TV was the flagship station of its founding owner Diversified Communications, which was owned by the Hildreth family of Bangor. Peter Asher
Peter Asher (born 22 June 1944) is an English guitarist, singer, manager and record producer. He came to prominence in the 1960s as a member of the pop music vocal duo Peter and Gordon before going on to a successful career as a manager and record producer, helping to foster the recording careers of James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt among others.
