WZLO
WZLO (103.1 FM) is a commercial radio station that as of December 2024, is silent. Licensed to Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, the station serves the Bangor area. The studios and offices are in Bangor, while the transmitter is off Route 15 in Charleston, Maine. The station is owned by The Zone Corporation, the broadcast company owned by authors Tabitha and Stephen King. The station signed on in 1981 as WDME-FM, the FM sister station of WDME (1340 AM), which operated from 1967 to 1991. From 1983 to 1998, WDME's studios were located in a converted railroad car, the "Gulf Stream", that had been retired by Amtrak. The Zone Corporation bought the station in 2001, renamed it WZON-FM in 2009 and WZLO in 2012, and closed it in 2024. A sale to Mix Maine Media is pending. WZON
WZON (620 AM) is a radio station that is currently silent. The station is licensed to Bangor and serves Central Maine. Along with sister station 103.1 WZLO, WZON is owned by The Zone Corporation, the broadcast company owned by authors Tabitha King and her husband, best-selling horror writer Stephen King. WZON transmits with 5,000 watts, using a non-directional transmitter by day and a directional pattern at night to protect other stations on 620 kHz. WZON is one of Maine's oldest radio stations, first signing on the air in 1926 as WLBZ in Dover-Foxcroft. It moved to Bangor in 1928. The station became WACZ in 1981, and WZON after its purchase by Stephen King in 1983. King sold the station in 1990, but repurchased WZON out of bankruptcy in 1993. Tabitha "Tabby" Jane King ( Spruce, born March 24, 1949) is an American author. Early life Born in Old Town, Maine, Tabitha King is the third eldest daughter of Sarah Jane Spruce (née White; December 7, 1923 – April 14, 2007) and Raymond George Spruce (December 29, 1923 – May 29, 2014). In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign (also known as a call name or call letters—and historically as a call signal—or abbreviated as a call) is a unique identifier for a transmitter station.
