History Radio station WCNA-FM was founded in 1965 by Dr. Ralph Sheppard, a local dentist and owner of the ''Jackson County Advertiser'', a weekly newspaper. In 1971, Sheppard transferred the license to a company named Mellow Sound Broadcasting. WFPA (1400 AM, "NewsTalk 1400") is an American radio station licensed to serve Fort Payne, Alabama. The station is owned and operated by Southern Torch Media, Inc., located in Rainsville, Alabama. WFPA is presently silent, but is scheduled to return to the air sometime soon; when it last operated, it broadcast a news/talk format. History WFPA began broadcasting on January 8, 1950, as the first radio station in Fort Payne and DeKalb County. The owner was James Louis Killian. Killian sold WFPA to its general manager, George A. Gothberg, Jr., for $15,000 two years later; Gothberg, a resident of Cleveland, began operating the station 24 hours, unusual for that time in such a small market. In 1953, WFPA dropped its commercial programming for several hours in order to hold a fundraiser to buy the Fort Payne Fire Department a resuscitator. Effective Radiated Power
Effective radiated power (ERP), synonymous with equivalent radiated power, is an IEEE standardized definition of directional radio frequency (RF) power, such as that emitted by a radio transmitter. It is the total power in watts that would have to be radiated by a half-wave dipole antenna to give the same radiation intensity (signal strength or power flux density in watts per square meter) as the actual source antenna at a distant receiver located in the direction of the antenna's strongest beam ( main lobe). ERP measures the combination of the power emitted by the transmitter and the ability of the antenna to direct that power in a given direction. Eupora, Mississippi
Eupora is the largest city in Webster County, central Mississippi. The population was 2,197 at the 2010 census. History Eupora was established in 1889 by European Americans on a spur track of the Georgia Pacific Railway. While there had been agricultural development prior to this in the county, the railroad stimulated trade and businesses. Today this is the largest city in the county. Near here was a site in 1770 of armed conflict among some Native American tribes. The Chakchiuma were destroyed by the allied Choctaw and Chickasaw, who were traditional enemies in the region. They dominated territories in what became Mississippi and Alabama. In 1904 Bud Simpson, an African-American man also known as Sterling (or Starling) Dunham, was accused of raping some white girls. Fort Payne is a city in and county seat of DeKalb County, in northeastern Alabama, United States. At the 2020 census, the population was 14,877. European-American settlers gradually developed the settlement around the former fort. It grew rapidly in the late 19th century based on industrial resources and manufacturing increasing in the early 20th centuries. At the beginning of the 21st century, it still had 7000 workers in 100 mills producing varieties of socks, nearly half the world production.
