WMUR-TV (channel 9) is a television station licensed to Manchester, New Hampshire, United States, serving as the American Broadcasting Company, ABC affiliate to most of New Hampshire. Owned by Hearst Television, the station maintains studios on South Commercial Street in downtown Manchester, and its transmitter is located on the south peak of Mount Uncanoonuc in Goffstown. Manchester is part of the larger Boston television market, making WMUR-TV part of a nominal duopoly (broadcasting), duopoly with that city's ABC affiliate, WCVB-TV (channel 5); however, the two stations maintain separate operations. WGIR (610 kHz "News Radio 610") is a commercial AM radio station in Manchester, New Hampshire, with a news/talk radio format. The station is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. WGIR's studios and offices are on Foundry Street in Manchester. Much of the programming and news, but not the commercials, can be heard on co-owned WQSO 96.7 MHz in Rochester, serving the New Hampshire Seacoast. The transmitter is on Stark Lane in Manchester, near Interstate 293 Exit 7. WGIR is powered at 5,000 watts by day; to avoid interfering with other stations on AM 610, it reduces power at night to 1,000 watts. It uses a directional antenna at all times. WMTW (channel 8) is a television station licensed to Poland Spring, Maine, United States, serving the Portland area as an affiliate of ABC. It is owned by Hearst Television alongside CW affiliate WPXT (channel 51). The two stations share studios on Ledgeview Drive in Westbrook; WMTW's transmitter is located in West Baldwin, Maine. WMTW also operates a low-power digital fill-in translator on UHF channel 26 (also mapped to virtual channel 8) from the Time and Temperature Building in downtown Portland's Monument Square. William Loeb III
William Loeb III (December 26, 1905 – September 13, 1981) was an American newspaper publisher. He is remembered for his unyieldingly conservative political views, which helped made the ''Manchester Union Leader'' of Manchester, New Hampshire, one of the best-known small papers in the country. The newspaper also benefited from nationwide attention every four years during the New Hampshire presidential primary. WPXT (channel 51) is a television station in Portland, Maine, United States, affiliated with The CW. It is owned by Hearst Television alongside Poland Spring–licensed ABC affiliate WMTW (channel 8). The two stations share studios on Ledgeview Drive in Westbrook; WPXT's transmitter is located in West Baldwin, Maine. History The station signed on September 14, 1986, as Maine's first independent station and the first new commercial station to launch in the Portland market in 32 years. Mount Uncanoonuc
The Uncanoonuc Mountains are two small mountain peaks in Goffstown, New Hampshire, United States. The north peak, the highest point in Goffstown, has an elevation of above sea level, and the south peak rises to . The name may be derived from the Massachusett language term . The area was developed in the early 1900s as a resort with a hotel and incline railway. The mountains are still a good spot for hiking, snowshoeing, and scenic views of the nearby skyline of Manchester, as well as Mount Monadnock, Mount Kearsarge, and even, on a clear day, the faint skyline of Boston. They were the site of a small ski operation in the 1930s and 1940s, served by the incline railway that went up the south peak. With three main trails from top to bottom, it was a popular ski destination until 1941, when the railway was damaged by a fire. The incline railway has since been converted to a hiking trail.
