WINK-TV
WINK-TV (channel 11) is a television station licensed to Fort Myers, Florida, United States, serving as the CBS affiliate for Southwest Florida. It is owned by the McBride family and their Fort Myers Broadcasting Company, making it one of a handful of TV stations today to have locally-based ownership. Fort Myers Broadcasting also provides certain services to three Naples-licensed stations under a shared services agreement (SSA) with Sun Broadcasting: CW affiliate WXCW (channel 46), low-power Univision affiliate WUVF-LD (channel 2), and low-power WANA-LD (channel 18). The stations share studios on Palm Beach Boulevard ( SR 80) in northeast Fort Myers; WINK-TV's transmitter is located north of Fort Myers Shores, near the Charlotte–Lee county line. It is locally owned by Sun Broadcasting alongside two low-power stations: Univision/UniMás affiliate WUVF-LD (channel 2) and WANA-LD (channel 18), both also licensed to Naples. WAXA (1200 AM; "Maxima 97.3/95.7") was a radio station which broadcast a Spanish-language Tropical hits format. Licensed to Pine Island Center, Florida, United States, the station served the Fort Myers area. The station was last owned by Fort Myers Broadcasting Company. History WAXA signed on February 20, 1986, as WDCQ, offering an oldies format. It had changed to a talk format by 1992. An entry refers to "WDCQ Talk 1200". Fort Myers Broadcasting Company bought the station in 1995, with the sale not being completed until October 1996; soon afterward, the call letters were changed to WTLQ. In 1999, the station swapped call letters with 1240 AM and became WINK; four years later, WINK was moved back to 1240, and 1200 became WPTK, offering a separate talk lineup from that offered on WINK. WFSX (1240 AM) was a commercial radio station licensed to Fort Myers, Florida. Last Owned by Sun Broadcasting. The station was also heard on translator W231DC, 94.1 FM in Fort Myers, and via WFSX-FM and WHEL's HD2 channels. History In 1939, a construction permit was issued to the Fort Myers Broadcasting Company to build a 250-watt radio station. WFTM (for Fort Myers) began broadcasting the following year, Southwest Florida's first radio station. It switched its call sign to WAAC in 1942, becoming an affiliate of the CBS Radio Network, airing its schedule of dramas, comedies, news, sports, soap operas, game shows and big band broadcasts during the Golden Age of Radio. State Road 80 (SR 80) (also known as Palm Beach Boulevard in Lee County and Southern Boulevard in Palm Beach County) is a route linking US 41 Business in Fort Myers and State Road A1A in Palm Beach. The road is the northernmost of three linking Southwest Florida to South Florida via the Everglades (Alligator Alley and Tamiami Trail being the other two).
