''Von Stahel und Eysen'' (English: ''On Steel and Iron'') is the first known printed book on metallurgy, published in 1532 by several publishers: Kunegunde Hergot in Nuremberg, Melchior Sachs in Erfurt, and Peter Jordan in Mainz. It has been suggested that Hergot was probably the first to publish the text, as the material seems to come from Nuremberg: its material on tempering and quenching is similar to the short treatise on hardening iron beginning 'Von dem herten. Kunegunde Hergot
Kunegunde Hergot (died 7 February 1547) was a German printer in Nuremberg and the wife of first Hans Hergot, and later of Georg Wachter, both printers. It is believed that she printed much of the material printed under Hans Hergot's name, and that he was simply the distributor.Göllner The materials he was distributing were considered heretical and politically radical, and while George, Duke of Saxony presided, Hans Hergot was tried and condemned to death. Kunegunde tried to convince the Nuremberg city council to intercede, but was unsuccessful, and Hans was publicly executed in 1527. Kunegunde continued the business under her own name until 1538. Codex 3227a of the in Nuremberg (also known as ''Hs. 3227a'', ''GNM 3227a'', ) is a manuscript of 169 folia, dated to the close of the 14th century. Its text is written in Latin and German. The German portions have been identified as in East Central German dialect. The composition of the manuscript is sometimes dated to 1389 on the basis of the calendar on fol. 83v which covers the years 1390–1495 (assuming that the scribe compiled the calendar for future reference only), but it has been noted that nothing precludes a date in the first quarter of the 15th century. Tempering is a process of heat treating, which is used to increase the toughness of iron-based alloys. Tempering is usually performed after Hardening (metallurgy), hardening, to reduce some of the excess hardness, and is done by heating the metal to some temperature below the critical point (thermodynamics), critical point for a certain period of time, then allowing it to cool in still air.
