The women's tournament in Volleyball at the Summer Olympics, volleyball at the 2020 Summer Olympics was the 15th edition of the event at an Olympic Games, organised by the world's governing body, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball, FIVB, in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee, IOC. It was held in Tokyo, Japan from 25 July to 8 August 2021. It was originally scheduled to take place from 26 July to 9 August 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Olympic Committee, IOC and the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee announced on 24 March 2020 that the 2020 Summer Olympics would be delayed to 2021. It served as the Volleyball at the 2020 Summer Olympics, volleyball venue for the 2020 Summer Olympics and the Wheelchair basketball at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, wheelchair basketball knockout stage at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. This was the replacement of the Differ Ariake which was closed and demolished in June 2018. History The Ariake Arena was one of the six permanent facilities designed to be built in the district of Ariake in order to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Its construction began in January 2017 and was completed in December 2019. The total cost of the project was around 35 billion yen (about US$320 million) and it has the capacity 12,000 spectators, which can be expanded to a max capacity of 15,000 with temporary seating.
