Gastropod Shell
The gastropod shell is part of the body of many gastropods, including snails, a kind of mollusc. The shell is an exoskeleton, which protects from predators, mechanical damage, and dehydration, but also serves for muscle attachment and calcium storage. Some gastropods appear shell-less (slugs) but may have a remnant within the mantle, or in some cases the shell is reduced such that the body cannot be retracted within it (semi-slug). Some snails also possess an operculum that seals the opening of the shell, known as the Aperture (mollusc), aperture, which provides further protection. The study of mollusc shells is known as conchology. The biological study of gastropods, and other molluscs in general, is malacology. Shell morphology terms vary by species group. Shell layers The gastropod shell has three major layers secreted by the Mantle (mollusc), mantle. The calcareous central layer, ostracum, is typically made of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitated into an organic matrix ...

Vitrea Diaphana
''Vitrea diaphana'' is a species of small, air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Pristilomatidae.MolluscaBase eds. (2023). MolluscaBase. Vitrea diaphana (S. Studer, 1820). Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at: https://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=875637 on 2023-06-14 This is the type species of the genus '' Vitrea''. Description The coiled, rather small, dextral shell is very flattened and conical, the seam hardly rises when viewed from the side. It has a width of 3.1 to 4.2 mm and a height of 1.8 to 2.1 mm. It contains 5½ to 6 tightly wound, regular, only slowly increasing whorls. The body whorl is 1.7 to 2.3 times as wide at the aperture as the penultimate. The aperture is almost half cut off from the penultimate. It is transversely elliptic or transversely ovate when viewed directly from above, and has an obliquely crescent shape, due to the strong incision made by the previous whor ...

Vitrea Crystallina
''Vitrea crystallina'' is a species of small, air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial molluscs, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Pristilomatidae.MolluscaBase eds. (2023). MolluscaBase. Vitrea crystallina (O. F. Müller, 1774). Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at: https://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=819979 on 2023-06-13 Description For terms see gastropod shell. The 1.4-2.1 x 3-4 mm. shell is variable. It has 4-5 whorls and the last whorl width seen from above 1.5-2 x of penultimate whorl. The umbilicus is narrow, much narrower than in ''Vitrea botterii'', but clearly open, showing penultimate whorl, initially narrower, widened only at last whorl. Usually smaller than ''V. diaphana'', and larger than ''V. contracta'' which has more densely coiled whorls. Distribution This species occurs in countries and islands including: * List of non-marine molluscs of the Czech Republic, Czech Republic * List of non-marine moll ...
