The Visita de San Telmo was a Catholic visita located along the Arroyo de San Telmo in Baja California, Mexico. The visita was founded by Dominican missionaries sometime between 1798 and 1800 as an extension of Misión Santo Domingo de la Frontera. San Telmo (Kiliwa language, Kiliwa: '''Maat kuñaam'') is a town in Ensenada Municipality, Baja California, located on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Peter González
Peter González Telmo, OP (1190 – 15 April 1246), also known as Saint Elmo, was a Castilian Dominican friar and priest, born in 1190 in Frómista, Palencia, Kingdom of Castile and Leon. Life St. Peter Gonzalez was born in Castille, Spain, in 1190. González was educated by his uncle, the Bishop of Astorga, who gave him a canonry when he was very young. On one occasion, he was riding triumphantly into the city, his horse stumbled, dumping him into the mud to the amusement of onlookers. Humbled, the canon reevaluated his vocation and later resigned his position to enter the Dominican Order. González became a renowned preacher; crowds gathered to hear him and numberless conversions were the result of his efforts. He spent much of his time as a court preacher. Mission San Vicente Ferrer () was founded in August 1780 by the Dominican missionaries Miguel Hidalgo and Joaquin Valero among the Paipai Indians of northwestern Baja California, Mexico. San Vicente was one of the largest and most important of the Dominican missions, because of its fertile land, abundant water, and important location on the missions' Camino Real. It may have been even more important as an early military headquarters, charged with subduing the local groups and repelling assaults from the more warlike nations on the lower Colorado River. As at other Baja California missions, the native population diminished under the impact of Old World diseases, the political climate became less favorable to the missions under an independent Mexico after 1821, and by 1833 the mission was abandoned. Peveril Meigs III (May 5, 1903 – September 16, 1979) was an American geographer, notable for his studies of arid lands on several continents and in particular for his work on the native peoples and early missions of northern Baja California, Mexico. Biography Meigs was born in Flushing in New York City. He studied at the University of California, Berkeley, receiving his B.A. degree in 1925 and a Ph.D. in 1932. He held academic positions at San Francisco State Teachers College (1929), Chico State College (1929-1942), Louisiana State University (1938-1939), American University (1948), and George Washington University (1948). During the 1936 Democratic Party presidential primaries, Meigs joined an EPIC slate nominally pledged to Upton Sinclair for president; they actually supported Franklin D.
