Gaius Julius Vindex
Gaius Julius Vindex (c. AD 2568) was a Roman governor in the province of Gallia Lugdunensis. He was of a noble Gallic family of Aquitania (given senatorial status under Claudius) and was one of the men belonging to a faction of Empress Agrippina, the mother of Nero. Vindex had taken part in a conspiracy against the emperor in 59. However, with the assassination of Agrippina by Nero, this faction was dissolved. In either late 67 or early 68, Vindex rebelled against Emperor Nero. Though the aims of his followers may have been more complex, Vindex, as a senator, probably had the aim simply of replacing Nero with a better emperor. According to the historian Cassius Dio, Vindex "was powerful in body and of shrewd intelligence, was skilled in warfare and full of daring for any great enterprise; and he had a passionate love of freedom and a vast ambition". ''Phanaeus vindex'', the rainbow scarab, is a North American dung beetle, found from the eastern US to Arizona and Mexico. The head is a metallic yellow color, and males have a black horn which curves backward toward the thorax. Both sexes have yellow antennae which can retract into a ball on the underside of the head. Garrett County () is the westernmost county of the U.S. state of Maryland. As of the 2020 census, the population was 28,806, making it the third-least populous county in Maryland. Denis Taaffe
Denis Taaffe or Dennis Taafe (bapt. 1759, Clogher, County Louth; d. 1813, Dublin) was an Irish political writer and historian also known under the pseudonym Julius Vindex, and a veteran of the 1798 Rebellion. He wrote extensively against the notion of England having had a civilising mission in Ireland. Educated in Franciscan colleges and in Prague, Taaffe was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1782. In 1788 objection to his excessive drinking caused him briefly to become a Church of Ireland clergyman. But he soon encountered the same problems. A linguist, with knowledge of Irish, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, French, Italian, German and Dutch, Taaffe was, with difficulty, able to support himself in Dublin as a teacher and translator. Taaffe was sympathetic to the democratic views of the United Irishmen and, as they despaired of overturning the Protestant Ascendancy in Parliament, of their turn toward insurrection. Giselher Wirsing (born Max Emanuel Wirsing; April 15, 1907 – September 23, 1975) was a right-wing German journalist, author, and foreign policy expert who was active during Nazi Germany and the Bonn republic.
