View Of The Forum In Rome
''View of the Forum in Rome'' is an 1814 landscape painting by the Danish artist Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. A veduta, it depicts the Trajan's Forum in Rome looking towards the Palazzo Senatorio on the Capitol. The complex, dating back to Ancient Rome, was still in the process of excavation at the time. In the left foreground are the remaining pillars of the Temple of Castor and Pollux. On the right is the Arch of Septimius Severus. The artist would go on to be one of the pioneers of the Golden Age of Danish Art. Eckersberg produced the painting during his stay in Italy from 1813 to 1816. It combines elements of neoclassicism and realism, and was painted outdoors. Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg
Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (2 January 1783 – 22 July 1853) was a Danish painter. He was born in Blåkrog in the Duchy of Schleswig (now in Aabenraa Municipality, in the southern part of Jutland in Denmark). He went on to lay the foundation for the period of art known as the Golden Age of Danish Painting, and is referred to as the "Father of Danish painting". Life Growing up and early training On 2 January 1783, Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg was born in Blåkrog in the Duchy of Schleswig (now in Aabenraa Municipality, in the southern part of Jutland in Denmark), to Henrik Vilhelm Eckersberg, a painter and carpenter, and Ingeborg Nielsdatter. In 1786 the family moved to Blans, a village near the Alssund, where he enjoyed drawing pictures of the surrounding countryside, and taking sailing tours in his father's boat. The Temple of Castor and Pollux () was an ancient Roman temple, temple in the Roman Forum, Rome, Central Italy. It was originally built in gratitude for victory at the Battle of Lake Regillus (495 BC). Castor and Pollux (Greek Polydeuces) were the Dioscuri, the "twins" of Gemini twins, Gemini, the twin sons of Zeus (Jupiter (mythology), Jupiter) and Leda (mythology), Leda.
