Vice Commandant Of The Coast Guard
The vice commandant of the Coast Guard serves as the second-in-command of the United States Coast Guard, behind only the commandant of the Coast Guard. Since 1929, 31 officers have served as vice commandant, or, as the position was referred to before 1972, assistant commandant. The title of the position was changed effective October 2, 1972, pursuant to . This position has been historically held by a vice admiral until the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2015 elevated the statutory rank for the position to admiral. The current vice commandant is Admiral Kevin E. Lunday, who assumed office on June 13, 2024. Admiral (abbreviated as ADM) is a four star rank, four-star commissioned officer rank in the United States Navy, the United States Coast Guard, and the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps with the U.S. uniformed services pay grades, pay grade of O-10. Admiral ranks above Vice admiral (United States), vice admiral and below Fleet admiral (United States), fleet admiral in the Navy; the Coast Guard and the Public Health Service do not have an established grade above admiral. Lloyd Chalker
Lloyd Toulmin Chalker (December 4, 1883 – March 12, 1981) was an American naval officer who served as vice commandant of the United States Coast Guard and is credited as the "father of Coast Guard aviation". Early life and education Chalker was born in Mobile, Alabama and entered the United States Coast Guard Academy, from which he graduated, in 1903. Career During his early Coast Guard career, Chalker served on three Bering Sea ice patrols. In World War I he was posted to the Columbia-class protected cruiser USS ''Minneapolis'' and, following the war, was navigator of USS '' Von Steuben'' and commanding officer of the destroyer USS ''Ericsson''. James Hirshfield
Vice Admiral James Albert Hirshfield (July 30, 1902 – May 16, 1993) was the sixth Assistant Commandant (now called Vice Commandant) of the United States Coast Guard. During World War II he was the commanding officer of the USCGC Campbell (WPG-32) during a battle with German U-boats, earning the Navy Cross. Early life James Albert Hirshfield was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on 30 July 1902, the son of Eli Albert Hirshfield and Katherine Devine Hirshfield. He received his early education in San Antonio, Texas and graduated from Main Avenue High School. During 1921 and 1922 he attended the University of Texas.
