Vepriai Crater
Vepriai is the largest impact crater in Lithuania, named after the town of Vepriai located at its center. The crater is not exposed to the surface, having been eroded and covered by sedimentary rocks during the last glacial period. Vepriai crater is in diameter and its age is estimated to be greater than 160 ± 10 million years (Middle or Late Jurassic). The meteorite struck soft sandstone and limestone rocks thus its initial depth exceeded but the site was soon covered by sedimentary rocks, sand and clay. A small lake has formed in the Jurassic in the impact site. The crater was reported in 1978, as proven by occurrence of shatter cones and impact glass in drill-core samples acquired during a geophysical research of the locality. Vepriai () is the largest town in Ukmergė district, Lithuania, situated south-west of Ukmergė with population of about 549 (2011). The capital of Vepriai elderate. History Vepriai was founded on a hill near Vepriai Lake and south of Šventoji River. It is first mentioned in Wigand of Marburg's Chronicle of 1384 under the name of ''Weperen''. In the Middle Ages Vepriai was a powerful hill fort which assisted in protection of Lithuanian lands from western threats, primarily the Teutonic Order. Wigand of Marburg asserted that the castle belonged to the Grand Duke of Lithuania. Gediminas Motuza-Matuzevičius (born 24 August 1946 in Vilnius) is a Lithuanian geologist and author of geology textbooks. He is currently professor in the Faculty of the Natural Sciences at Vilnius University and honorary professor of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Motuza was born to a Lithuanian–Latvian family of a painter and a linguist. Impactite is rock created or modified by one or more impacts of a meteorite. Impactites are considered metamorphic rock, because their source materials were modified by the heat and pressure of the impact. Shatter cones are rare geological features that are only known to form in the bedrock beneath meteorite impact craters or underground nuclear explosions. They are evidence that the rock has been subjected to a shock with pressures in the range of . Morphology Shatter cones have a distinctively conical shape that radiates from the top (''apex'') of the cones repeating cone-on-cone in large and small scales in the same sample. Clay is a type of fine-grained natural soil material containing clay minerals (hydrous aluminium phyllosilicates, e.g. kaolin, Al2 Si2 O5( OH)4). Sandstone is a clastic sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand-sized (0.0625 to 2 mm) silicate grains. Sandstones comprise about 20–25% of all sedimentary rocks.
