Ventifacts (band)
A ventifact (also wind-faceted stone, windkanter) is a rock that has been abraded, pitted, etched, grooved, or polished by wind-driven sand or ice crystals. The word "Ventifact" is derived from the Latin word "Ventus" meaning 'wind'. These geomorphic features are most typically found in arid environments where there is little vegetation to interfere with aeolian particle transport, where there are frequently strong winds, and where there is a steady but not overwhelming supply of sand. Ventifacts can be abraded to eye-catching natural sculptures such as the main features of the White Desert National Park near Farafra Oasis in Egypt. In moderately tall, isolated rock outcrops, mushroom-shaped pillars of rock may form as the outcrop is eroded by saltating sand grains. In geology, rock (or stone) is any naturally occurring solid mass or aggregate of minerals or mineraloid matter. Schist
Schist ( ) is a medium-grained metamorphic rock generally derived from fine-grained sedimentary rock, like shale. It shows pronounced ''schistosity'' (named for the rock). Jake Matijevic (or Jake M) is a pyramidal rock on the surface of Aeolis Palus, between Peace Vallis and Aeolis Mons ("Mount Sharp"), in Gale crater on the planet Mars. The approximate site coordinates are: . The rock was encountered by the ''Curiosity'' rover on the way from Bradbury Landing to Glenelg Intrigue in September 2012 and measures about height and width. Striation (geology)
In geology, a striation is a groove, created by a geological process, on the surface of a rock or a mineral. In structural geology, striations are linear furrows, or linear marks, generated from Fault (geology), fault movement. The striation's direction reveals the movement direction in the fault plane. Similar striations, called glacial striations, can occur in areas subjected to glaciation. Striations can also be caused by underwater landslides. Striations can also be a growth pattern that looks like a set of hairline grooves, seen on crystal faces of certain minerals. Examples of minerals that can show growth striations include pyrite, feldspar, quartz, tourmaline, chalcocite and sphalerite.
