Velvet is an English primarily feminine given name derived from the name for the fabric. A young Elizabeth Taylor played the horse-crazy 12-year-old Velvet Brown in the 1944 film ''National Velvet'' based on the 1935 book by Enid Bagnold. An American television series based on the book and movie aired between 1960 and 1962. Usage The name ranked among the top 1,000 names for newborn American girls between 1961 and 1964, coinciding with the air dates of the television series, but has not otherwise ranked among the most popular names in that country. Velvet (dog)
Velvet is a black lab-shepherd cattle mixed-breed dog, owned by Matty Bryant of Milwaukie, Oregon, who helped save three climbers, including Bryant, when they became stranded on Mount Hood, Oregon, on February 18, 2007. The three climbers and Velvet toppled off a ledge while descending from a climb of Mount Hood. Due to low visibility, they stepped off a ledge at about elevation during a storm, separating them from five other members of the party. The five reported the accident and were themselves soon rescued. The three fallen climbers activated Mountain Locator Units to let searchers find their position, which was at about elevation in White River Canyon. Due to worsening conditions, they were forced to spend the night on the mountain while winds blew with temperatures in the 20s (−1 to −7 C). Velvet James Barnes (April 13, 1941 – September 14, 2002), also known as Jim "Bad News" Barnes, was an American basketball player, who was an Olympic Gold Medalist and the No. 1 overall pick of the 1964 NBA draft. He played college basketball at Texas Western College (now the University of Texas at El Paso). Early life As a child, Barnes picked and chopped cotton, growing up in Tuckerman, Arkansas. He played basketball wearing socks, as his family was too poor to afford basketball shoes. At age 13, Barnes had grown to 6'6" and his grandfather was said to have been 7'0" tall. Jenny Marielle Pettersson (born 5 November 1975, Helsingborg, Sweden), professionally known as Velvet, is a Swedish dance-pop singer. She has released two albums since her 2005 debut in the music industry and her first eight singles have all achieved a top-twenty peak on the Swedish Singles Chart. Early life Velvet moved from Helsingborg to Stockholm in 1993 to study ballet at Balettakademien. She soon took singing lessons at a dance school where she "got a voice". Velvet McIntyre (born November 24, 1962) is a Canadian retired professional wrestler. After beginning her career in 1980, she wrestled in American independent promotions before joining the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE). She had rivalries with both The Fabulous Moolah and Sherri Martel and held the WWF Women's Championship and WWF Women's Tag Team Championship.
