Gujarat Legislative Assembly
Gujarat Legislative Assembly or Gujarat Vidhan Sabha is the unicameral legislature of the Indian state of Gujarat, in the state capital Gandhinagar. Presently, 182 members of the Legislative Assembly are directly elected from single-member constituencies (seats). It has a term of 5 years unless it is dissolved sooner. 13 constituencies are reserved for scheduled castes and 27 constituencies for scheduled tribes. From its majority party group or by way of a grand coalition cabinet of its prominent members,the state's Executive namely the Government of Gujarat is formed. Since 1995 the Gujarat Legislative Assembly is controlled by the Bharatiya Janata Party with a majority after elections. 2012 Gujarat Legislative Assembly Election
The 2012 Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections were held in the Indian state of Gujarat in December 2012 for all 182 members of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. Incumbent Chief Minister Narendra Modi of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), in power since 2002, was running for his fourth term. The leader of the opposition was Shaktisinh Gohil of the Indian National Congress (INC). Elections were held in two phases, the first on 13 December and the second on 17 December 2012. Total voting turnout of both phases was 71.32%, highest since 1980. Results were declared on 20 December 2012. The BJP, led by Narendra Modi, won 116 seats out of total 182 seats and formed the government while INC won 60 seats. BJP has been in the power in Gujarat since 1995. The first assembly was elected in 1962. Constituencies In 1962 the first Gujarat Legislative Assembly was elected with 154 seats. In 1966 the number was raised to 166. In 1971 the number was raised to 182. In 1976 the government imposed a moratorium on further changes until after the 2001 Census of India. 2008 to date Following the 2001 Census of India, a delimitation commission was set up, with Justice Kuldip Singh, a retired Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as its chairperson. The 4th Gujarat Legislative Assembly election was held in 1972. Indian National Congress won 140 seats out of 168 seats. While, NCO won 16 seats. 1985 Gujarat Legislative Assembly Election
The 7th Gujarat Legislative Assembly election was held in 1985. The incumbent Indian National Congress (INC) obtained majority with an increase in the vote share and number of seats which was a record in terms of number of seats. INC won 149 seats out of total 182 seats. Janata Party (JP) won only 14 seats, showcasing dominance of INC at that time. 1990 Gujarat Legislative Assembly Election
The 8th Gujarat Legislative Assembly election was held in 1990. No party won the majority. Janata Dal (JD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 70 and 67 seats respectively. Indian National Congress won only 33 seats, compared to 149 seats in previous legislative election.
