Vauxhall Helicopter Crash
On 16 January 2013, an Agusta A109 helicopter crashed in Vauxhall, London, after it collided with the jib of a construction crane attached to St George Wharf Tower. Two people died in the incident: the pilot, Pete Barnes, and a pedestrian, Matthew Wood. Five people were taken to hospital and seven more were treated at the scene. The pilot had diverted because of poor visibility. The official report concluded he was probably unaware how close the tower was, and that the deaths were accidental. Barnes was an experienced helicopter pilot, flying commercially for many years – including having experience with the Great North Air Ambulance Service. St George Wharf Tower
St George Wharf Tower, also known as the Vauxhall Tower, is a residential skyscraper in Vauxhall, London, and part of the St George Wharf development. At tall with 50 storeys, it is the 20th-tallest building in London and was the tallest residential building in the United Kingdom on its completion. Vauxhall Bus Station
Vauxhall bus station is a bus station in Vauxhall, in the London Borough of Lambeth. It is operated by London Buses and owned and maintained by Transport for London, and is the second busiest bus station in the city. The station, which is adjacent to the Vauxhall railway and tube stations, is situated on Bondway between Wandsworth Road, Kennington Road and Parry Street. Vauxhall (, ) is a National Rail, London Underground and London Buses interchange station in south London. It is at the Vauxhall#Vauxhall Cross, Vauxhall Cross road junction opposite the southern approach to Vauxhall Bridge over the River Thames in the district of Vauxhall. The mainline station is run by the South Western Railway (train operating company), South Western Railway and is the first stop on the South West Main Line from towards and the south-west. A fireboat or Fire-float Pyronaut, fire-float is a specialized watercraft with pumps and nozzles designed for fighting shoreline and shipboard fires. The first fireboats, dating to the late 18th century, were tugboats, retrofitted with firefighting equipment. Older designs derived from tugboats and modern fireboats more closely resembling seafaring ships can both be found in service today. Some departments would give their multi-purpose craft the title of "fireboat" also. Tower Lifeboat Station
Tower Lifeboat Station is located on a custom made Floating dock (jetty), at Victoria Embankment on the North Bank of the River Thames, next to Waterloo Bridge. It is one of the newest lifeboat stations operated by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), established in 2002. Two lifeboats, ''Hurley Burley'' (E-07), since 2012, and ''Hearn Medicine Chest'' (E-10), since 2019, are principally stationed at Tower Lifeboat Station. Royal National Lifeboat Institution
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is the largest of the lifeboat (rescue), lifeboat services operating around the coasts of the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man, as well as on some inland waterways. Founded in 1824 as the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, it soon afterwards became the Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck because of the patronage of King George IV.
