Vasantrao Deshpande
Vasantrao Deshpande (2 May 1920 – 30 July 1983) was a Hindustani classical vocalist renowned for his contribution to Natya Sangeet (musical dramas). Early life Vasantrao Deshpande was born into a Deshastha Brahmin family in Murtizapur, Akola District, in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra in India. At the age of eight, Vasantrao Deshpande's ability was observed by Bhalji Pendharkar, who cast him in the role of Krishna in the Hindi movie '' Kaliya Mardan'' (1935). He obtained his PhD in Music. Training Vasantrao Deshpande got trained under several gurus, in various different schools of singing. He began his musical training with Mstr. Shankarrao Sapre of Gwalior, a disciple of V. D. Ashtavinayak (film)
''Ashtavinayak'' is a Marathi-language film released on 9 February 1979. The film was directed by Rajdutt and produced by Sharad Pilgaonkar under the banner of Manorama Films. The film is based on the divine intervention to a wealthy family from Sangli in 1975. Plot Nana Inamdar is the owner of a paper mill and a devotee of lord ganesh. The wealthy mill owner's son, Bal, returns from studying abroad with a grudge against God. He blames a cruel fate for his mother's death and a cold stepmother. Taking over the family business, Bal clashes with tradition by canceling the annual Ganesh festival, to complete increased orders but this decision angers the workers. Dinanath Mangeshkar
Deenanath Mangeshkar (; 29 December 1900 – 24 April 1942) was an Indian actor, Natya Sangeet musician and, Hindustani classical vocalist who was active in Marathi theatre. He is the father of well-known singers Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Meena Khadikar and Usha Mangeshkar as well as composer Hridaynath Mangeshkar. Background Deenanath Mangeshkar was born in Mangeshi, Goa on 29 December 1900. His father, Ganesh Bhatt Bhikoba (Bhikambhatt) Navathe Hardikar (Abhisheki) was a married Karhade Brahmin who served as priest at the famous Mangeshi Temple in Goa. His mother Yesubai Rane was his father's mistress belonging to the Devadasi community of Goa, which is now known as Gomantak Maratha Samaj. In his teens, he adopted the surname "Mangeshkar," which means "of Mangesh." Mangesh is also the name of the deity worshipped in the Mangeshi Temple. Ramkrishnabuwa Vaze, also known as Vazebuwa, (28 November 1871 – 5 May 1945) was a Hindustani Classical musician of the Gwalior tradition known for his impact on popularizing classical music and its impression on Natyageet in the early half of the 20th century. Bhendibazaar Gharana
The Bhendibazaar gharana is one of the vocal gharanas of Indian classical music, which originated in Bhendi Bazaar area of Mumbai in 1890. The founders of the gharana originally belonged to the Moradabad area of Uttar Pradesh. Upon migrating to Mumbai, their gharana became better known as the Bhendibazaar gharana instead of Moradabad gharana. History and features The Bhendibazaar gharana was founded around 1890 by brothers Chhajju Khan, Nazir Khan and Khadim Hussain Khan in the Bhendi bazaar area of Mumbai. The features of this gharana include using 'aakaar' for presenting khyals in an open voice, with clear intonation, a stress on breath-control, singing long passages in a single breath, a preference for madhyalaya (medium tempo) and use of the well-known '' Merukhand'' or ''Khandmeru'' system for extended ''alaps''. Anjanibai Malpekar
Anjanibai Malpekar (22 April 1883 – 7 August 1974) was an Indian classical singer, belonging to the Bhendibazaar gharana of Hindustani classical music. In 1958, she became the first woman to be awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, the highest honour conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama. Acclaimed for her beauty in her youth, Malpekar was the muse of painters Raja Ravi Varma and M. V. Dhurandhar. Early life Anjanibai Malpekar was born on 22 April 1883, in Malpe, Pernem in Portuguese Goa, in music loving family that belonged to Goan Kalavant community. Aman Ali Khan
Ustad Aman Ali Khan ‘Amar’ (1888–1953) was an Indian classical vocalist and composer from the Bhendibazaar Gharana. He brought many Carnatic ragas into Hindustani classical music. Aman Ali was the son of Chhajju Khan, one of the founders of the Bhendibazaar Gharana, who came from Uttar Pradesh and settled in the Bhendibazaar area of Bombay. Aman Ali learned Carnatic music under the guidance of Kalanidhi Bidaram Krishnappa, court musician of Mysore state. He introduced rhythmic play (layakari) and style of solfa singing ( sargam) to the Bhendibazaar gharana. Aman Ali's music was especially noted for its rhythmic sargam patterns, for which he derived inspiration from Carnatic music. The Kirana Gharana is a Hindustani music apprenticeship tradition (''gharana'') made popular by Bande Ali Khan in the 19th Century and his cousins Abdul Karim Khan and Abdul Wahid Khan. Evolved from the instrumental and vocal Gauharbani dhrupad lineages of medieval music maestros Nayak Gopal, Nayak Dhondu, and Nayak Bhanu.
