Varsity (rowing Regatta)
The Varsity is a rowing regatta on the Amsterdam–Rhine Canal in Houten, Netherlands each Spring. The Varsity is the oldest and most prestigious student rowing regatta in the Netherlands. The Varsity is one of the few rowing races that is exclusive to students and a fever-pitch rivalry exists between participants. Traditional elements are combined with contemporary rowing races. For instance, while rowing crews defend the honour of the club on the water, spectators on the dike are traditionally brawling with equal fanaticism. The main event is the Oude Vier (Varsity Four, literally 'Old Four') which is rowed in a 4+ over a distance of 3 km. All other events row the standard 2 km distance in common race rowing classes such as the coxed four, 4+, coxless four, 4-, coxless pair, 2- and single scull. Skadi Rowing Club
A.R.S.R. "Skadi" (), is a Dutch student rowing club located in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The name "Skadi" refers to the goddess Skaði from Norse mythology, while A.R.S.R. is the abbreviation for "Algemene Rotterdamse Studenten Roeivereniging" which is Dutch for "Comprehensive Rotterdam Student Rowing Club." Skadi has won The Varsity, the oldest and most prestigious Dutch student rowing event, a total of 9 times. Skadi is the only rowing club affiliated with Erasmus University Rotterdam. It is situated beside the Noorderkanaal just north of the city centre, which is connected to the river Rotte, where the rowers do most of their training. North Sea Canal
The North Sea Canal () is a Dutch ship canal from Amsterdam to the North Sea at IJmuiden, constructed between 1865 and 1876 to enable seafaring vessels to reach the port of Amsterdam. This man-made channel terminates at Amsterdam in the closed-off IJ Bay, which in turn connects to the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. The drainage of the canal to the North Sea is done through the IJmuiden sea lock, augmented by the largest pumping station in Europe. The Boat Race
The Boat Race is an annual set of rowing races between the Cambridge University Boat Club and the Oxford University Boat Club, traditionally rowed between open-weight eights on the River Thames in London, England. It is also known as the University Boat Race and the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. The men's race was first held in 1829 and is the second oldest inter-university sporting event in the world.
