Varney Scale Models was founded in 1936 by Gordon Varney, an early pioneer in manufacturing HO scale model trains. The development of a reliable 6-volt motor made it possible to produce model locomotives capable of pulling long trains. The company relocated from Chicago, Illinois, to Miami, Florida, in 1955. Varney sold his company to Sol Kramer in 1960, which became the basis for launching his own line of Life-Like Trains in 1970. Varney models were above average in quality and detail and are still quite popular with collectors and model railroad enthusiasts. History The company was founded by Gordon Varney in 1936. The Whitmer Peninsula () is a broad ice-capped peninsula, about long and wide, between Cheetham Ice Tongue and Harbord Glacier Tongue on the coast of Victoria Land, Antarctica. Location The Whitmer Peninsula is on the west coast of the Ross Sea. Kohler Head is on its northeast coast. It is south of the Cheetham Ice Tongue and Lamplugh Island, east of the Davis Glacier and north of the Harbord Glacier, which flows between Starr Nunatak and Varney Nunatak into the sea, where it forms the Harbord Glacier Tongue. Exploration and naming The Whitmer Peninsula was mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and United States Navy air photos, 1957–62. It was named by the United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Lieutenant (j.g.) R.D. Whitmer, U.S. Navy, who wintered over at Williams Field, McMurdo Sound, in 1956. Varney Air Lines was an American airline company that started service on April 6, 1926, as an airmail carrier. Formed by Walter Varney, the airline was based in Boise, Idaho, United States. The airline is one of the predecessors of United Airlines. Historical background In 1925, the Congress passed HR 7064 entitled ''"An Act to encourage commercial aviation and to authorize the Postmaster General to contract for Air Mail Service"'' (aka "The Kelly Act") which directed the U.S. Post Office Department to contract with private airlines to carry the mail over designated routes many of which connected with the Government operated Transcontinental Air Mail route between New York and San Francisco. Varney won the contract for CAM-5 as the only bidder. Its first flight under contract with the USPOD was from Pasco, Washington to Elko, Nevada with an intermediate stop in Boise.
