Women's surfing is thought to date back to the 17th century. One of the earliest records of women surfing is of princess Keleanohoana’api’api, also known as Kalea or the Maui Surf Riding Princess. It is rumored that Kalea was the trailblazer of surfing and could surf better than both men and women. A few centuries later in the mid-late 1800s, Thrum’s Hawaiian Annual reported that women in ancient Hawaii surfed in equal numbers and frequently better than men. 2015 World Surf League
The 2015 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) was the first year of the World Surf League, which grew out of the Association of Surfing Professionals. Men and women competed in separate tours with events taking place from late February to mid-December, at various surfing locations around the world. The surfer with the most points at the end of the tour (after discarding their two worst results) was named the 2015 ASP Surfing World Champion. Adriano de Souza of Brazil won the men's world title with 57,000 points. Bianca Buitendag
Bianca Buitendag is a South African professional surfer. She has represented South Africa at the 2020 Summer Olympics where she won silver in the women's shortboard competition. Early and personal life Buitendag was born in Cape Town, Western Cape, Western Cape, South Africa on 9 November 1993. She grew up near the beach of False Bay outside of Cape Town. With her father's encouragement she learned to surf at the age of eight with her two brothers. When she was twelve her family moved to the Southern Cape region of South Africa. Bianca only spoke Afrikaans when she first went to school, so her parents decided to put her in an English school. In 2015 her father, Collin Buitendag, died. Laura Enever (born 14 November 1991) is an Australian professional surfer. Enever was the ASP Women's World Junior Champion in 2009. She made her professional debut in 2011. Tatiana "Tati" Guimarães Weston-Webb (born May 9, 1996) is a Brazilian surfer based in Kauai, Hawaii. She is also both American and English. She was the only rookie on the professional surfing World Championship Tour in 2015. Weston-Webb wears jersey number 9, and her 2016 'CT rank is number 4. She competed in both the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics for Brazil, winning silver in the latter and because of that she became the first woman surfer from Brazil to win a medal at the Olympics. Sage Erickson (born December 28, 1990) is an American professional surfer born in Ojai, California, United States. Career At the age of nine, Erickson moved to the Island of Oahu, Hawaii. When she was 11, at Sunset Beach with her family, she picked up a board and paddled out. She got her first wave all the way in. After that, she began surfing every day. At the age of 14, Erickson moved to Ventura, California, where she currently resides. She started her competitive surfing career when she was 14.
