George Van Dyne
George Van Dyne (1933–1981) was a pioneer of systems ecology and served as the first director of the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory in the United States. Early career Van Dyne was brought up on a ranch at Trinidad, Colorado, not far from the New Mexican border. Having developed skills as a horseman and an interest in the American West, he studied animal science at the Colorado State University. He followed this with a master's degree in range science at Dakota State University. He then gained his PhD from the University of California developing mathematical models for the ecosystem of rangeland. He then went to work at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory where he led the Environmental Sciences Section. He joined Jerry S. Olson and Bernard Pattern in delivering the first Systems Ecology course at the University of Tennessee. Van Dyne is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in the town of Friendship, in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, United States. At the 2020 census, its population was 292. The road traveling north-south through the community was part of the Yellowstone Trail and later Wisconsin Highway 175; it is now a county highway. The Van Dyne Civic Building, also known as The Court House, is an historic, American courthouse building that is located in Troy, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. History and architectural features Built in 1894, this historic structure is a two-and-one-half-story, rectangular building that measures fifty feet wide and eighty-four feet deep. It has red brick exterior walls and sits on a cut stone foundation. The front facade features an entrance arch reflecting Richardsonian Romanesque-style design influences. It also has pointed gable ends, a bracketed cornice, and two tower at either end of the front facade. Founded by Lloyd Van Dyne and Fergus Crotty, on January 1, 1935, during the height of the Great Depression, the company grew from a $500 loan into one of the premier privately owned uniform companies in the United States. Van Dyne Crotty remained a family-owned and operated business, run by Van Dyne and Crotty, and then by 2 further generations of the Crotty family, until its sale in 2006 to Cintas Corporation ().
