Valley Of Shadows (ballet)
''Valley of Shadows'' is a one-act ballet created by Kenneth MacMillan in 1983 for the Royal Ballet. The music is by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (extracts from '' Hamlet'' and '' Souvenir de Florence'') and Bohuslav Martinů (Double Concerto, 1938). The story is loosely based on the novel '' The Garden of the Finzi-Continis'' by Giorgio Bassani. The designer was Yolanda Sonnabend, who had first collaborated with him on 1963's ''Symphony''. Kenneth MacMillan
Sir Kenneth MacMillan (11 December 192929 October 1992) was a British ballet dancer and choreographer who was artistic director of the Royal Ballet in London between 1970 and 1977, and its principal choreographer from 1977 until his death. Earlier he had served as director of ballet for the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. He was also associate director of the American Ballet Theatre from 1984 to 1989, and artistic associate of the Houston Ballet from 1989 to 1992. From a family with no background of ballet or music, MacMillan was determined from an early age to become a dancer. The director of Royal Ballet, Sadler's Wells Ballet, Ninette de Valois, accepted him as a student and then a member of her company. In the late 1940s, MacMillan built a successful career as a dancer, but, plagued by stage fright, he abandoned it while still in his twenties. Sandra Conley
Sandra Conley (born 24 October 1943) is a former ballet dancer, a principal dancer with the Royal Ballet. Conley was born on 24 October 1943 in Hatfield, England. In 1962, Conley made her debut with the Royal Ballet's touring company, and in 1970 transferred to the Covent Garden company. She was promoted to principal dancer in 1980. Conley created the lead female role in Kenneth MacMillan's Valley of Shadows. Ashley Page
Ashley Page OBE (born August 1956) is a British former ballet dancer, choreographer and was artistic director of Scottish Ballet for ten years. Ashley Page was born in Rochester, Kent in August 1956. Page trained the Royal Ballet School, and joined the Royal Ballet in 1976. There, he worked closely with Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan, creating numerous roles in their new ballets. He also worked with visiting choreographers including Glen Tetley and, especially, Richard Alston, who was to become his choreographic mentor. He was promoted to principal dancer in 1984. Page was artistic director of Scottish Ballet for ten years, from 2002 to 2012. In August 2012, Christopher Hampson succeeded him as artistic director of Scottish Ballet. David Wall (dancer)
David Richard Wall CBE (15 March 1946 – 18 June 2013) was an English ballet dancer of The Royal Ballet, where he was promoted to the rank of principal at the age of 21, the youngest in company history at the time. Early life and education Wall was born in Chiswick, London and went to preparatory school at Halliford School in Shepperton, where ballroom dancing classes were compulsory. His mother always said that he developed an interest in ballet watching the girls in the ballet classes that followed those ballroom classes. He then started weekly ballet classes with Mrs. Durnsford in Windsor. Wall studied at the Royal Ballet School and subsequently joined The Royal Ballet. Career Wall was 20 when he was promoted to soloist. A year later, he became the youngest male principal in the history of The Royal Ballet, until Sergei Polunin’s promotion in 2010 at the age of 20. Derek Deane (born 18 June 1953) is a British dancer and choreographer. Biography Derek Deane was raised in Redruth, Cornwall and trained in the Royal Ballet School. Alessandra Ferri OMRI (born 6 May 1963) is an Italian prima ballerina. She danced with the Royal Ballet (1980–1984), American Ballet Theatre (1985–2007) and La Scala Theatre Ballet (1992–2007) and as an international guest artist, before temporally retiring on 10 August 2007, aged 44, then returning in 2013.
