VIA Music
VIA () is an abbreviation for Vocal and Instrumental Ensemble (). It is the general name used for popular music (pop, rock, folk, etc.) bands that were formally recognized by the Soviet government from the 1960s to the 1980s. In Soviet times, the term ''VIA'' generally meant , but it is now used in Russia to refer specifically to pop, rock, and folk groups active during the Soviet period. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union the term gradually went out of use. In Yugoslavia, the abbreviation VIS ( sh-Cyrl, ВИС), meaning (), was used in the same context. Tsvety () is a Soviet and Russian rock band that, according to ''Itogi'' magazine, "started all Russian alternative culture". It was one of the first bands to introduce rock music to the Soviet show business. Established in 1969 by the frontman Stas Namin, releasing flexi discs throughout 1973 with the label Melodiya and sold over seven million copies. Their song "Happiness" was a hit in the USSR for 3 years in the 1980s. After their successful tour in the USSR in 1974, the band dissolved in 1975 with a conflict with the Philharmonic Society, and with the banning of the band by the government. Iveria ( ka, ივერია) was a Georgian music ensemble founded in 1968 that gained popularity in the Soviet Union in the 1970s. The group's art director was Alexander Basilaia. Dos-Mukasan (, ''Dos-Mūqasan'') is a Kazakh rock band, which was formed in Almaty Region in 1967 as VIA. The first lineup was formed in 1967 by four students of the Almaty Polytechnic Institute, Dosym Suleyev, Murat Kusainov, Kamit Sanbayev, and Alexander Litvinov. They first performed in Bayanaul on 1 September 1967. The name of the band was the abbreviation of their names. The band initially positioned as performers of Kazakh folk music and were criticized because they used guitars rather than traditional Kazakh musical instruments and used several vocals simultaneously. ''Ariel'' () are a "VIA" (pop/rock) band based in Chelyabinsk, Russia. They were formed in 1970 and headed by Valery Yarushin. From 1989 to the present day, they have been headed by Rostislav Gepp. The group emerged from a fusion of two earlier (1960s) ensembles, called ''Ariel'' and ''Allegro''.
