Uruguay River
The Uruguay River ( ; ) is a major river in South America. It flows from north to south and forms parts of the boundaries of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, separating some of the Argentine provinces of La Mesopotamia from the other two countries. It passes between the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil; forms the eastern border of the provinces of Misiones, Corrientes and Entre Ríos in Argentina; and makes up the western borders of the departments of Artigas, Salto, Paysandú, Río Negro, Soriano and Colonia in Uruguay. Etymology The name of the river tends to comes from the Spanish settlers' interpretation of the Guaraní language word the inhabitants of the region used to designate it. Misiones
Misiones (, ''Missions'') is one of the 23 provinces of Argentina, located in the northeastern corner of the country in the Mesopotamia region. It is surrounded by Paraguay to the northwest, Brazil to the north, east and south, and Corrientes Province of Argentina to the southwest. This was an early area of Roman Catholic missionary activity by the Jesuits in what was then called the province of Paraguay, beginning in the early 17th century. Chapecó River
The Chapecó River ( Portuguese, ''Rio Chapecó'') is a river of Santa Catarina state in southeastern Brazil. It is a tributary of the Uruguay River. The river is fed by streams rising in the Araucárias National Park, a conservation unit created in 2005. Other headwaters rise in the Mata Preta Ecological Station, a fully protected area created in 2005. The river supplies water to the municipality of Abelardo Luz, Santa Caterina. The Chapecó River Falls are one of the main attractions of the region. The Arapey Grande River is a river in the Salto Department of northwestern Uruguay. It flows from the northeast of department, with its headwaters near the border with Rivera Department, in a western direction and discharges in the Uruguay River. Its length is about . Quaraí River
The Quaraí or Cuareim River ( Portuguese Rio Quaraí, Spanish Río Cuareim) is a tributary of the Uruguay River. Location The river rises in the Coxilha de Santana (Spanish ''Cuchilla de Santa Ana''), an area of low-lying hills, and runs westward to join the Uruguay River. It forms the boundary between Uruguay on the south and Rio Grande do Sul state of Brazil on the north. Border dispute There is a long-standing and unresolved border dispute between Uruguay and Brazil along part of Quaraí River. However, this is not seen as a politically disturbing issue between the two countries, which have close and friendly diplomatic relations and strong economic ties. So far, the disputed areas have been effectively under Brazilian control.
