Uphill
Uphill is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Weston-super-Mare, in the North Somerset district, in the ceremonial county of Somerset, England, at the southern edge of the town, on the Bristol Channel coast. History Bone and stone tools found in caves at Uphill provide evidence of human activity in the Upper Palaeolithic period, and a radiocarbon date of around 28,000 Before Present, which came from a bone point, was the first scientifically derived direct date from the entire British Isles for an artefact of that period (the Aurignacian). The River Axe enters the Bristol Channel at Uphill where it is sheltered by Brean Down and it is possible that there was a port at Uphill in Roman times but no archaeological evidence has been found for this.Crockford-Hawley (2004) surmises that while ''archaeological evidence has yet to prove portexisted, most local people are quite happy to rely on long-established hearsay!'' Dennis Uphill
Edward Dennis Herbert Uphill (11 August 1931 – 7 February 2007) was an English footballer who played for Tottenham Hotspur, Reading, Coventry City, Mansfield Town, Watford and Crystal Palace. He also played non–league football for Rugby Town. Football career Uphill signed as a professional for Spurs in September 1949 and made his Football League debut against Sunderland on 2 February 1950. He played a part in the push and run side of 1950–51 when he scored one goal and made two appearances in the position of inside forward. Uphill made a total of six appearances and scored twice between 1950 and 1953. Signed by Reading in an exchange deal which involved Johnny Brooks in February 1953 he went on to make 92 appearances and netting 42 goals for the club. Uphill joined Coventry City in October 1955 where he completed 49 appearances and scoring on 16 occasions. Malcolm Uphill
Malcolm Ernest Uphill (15 April 1935 – 15 August 1999) was a Welsh professional motorcycle racer. He competed in British national-level short-circuit and in Grand Prix motorcycle racing. Uphill was the first competitor in the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy races to achieve a 100 mph average lap speed on a production motorcycle. __TOC__ Motorcycle racing career A native of Caerphilly, Wales, Uphill later lived at Heol, Trecastle and was educated at Twyn Secondary Modern School. Tom Uphill
Thomas Hubert Uphill (June 26, 1874 – February 17, 1962) was a socialist politician in British Columbia. He served a long time as mayor of Fernie and also represented the riding of Fernie in the British Columbia Legislative Assembly for forty years, most of them as the legislature's sole Labour Party MLA. Early life Uphill was born in 1874 in Chewton Mendip, Somerset, England, the son of a farm labourer.1911 Census of Canada & 1881 UK Census After serving in the Second Boer War, he moved to Fernie, British Columbia in 1904 and became a life insurance salesman.
