University Of Toronto School Of The Environment
The School of the Environment at the University of Toronto is a trans-disciplinary academic unit that acts as a hub for the study of the environment, sustainability and climate change, offering undergraduate and graduate programs, along with joint programs with many disciplinary departments across the University. According to Maclean's Magazine, the School ranks second for environmental science programs in Canada. The School's research focusses on knowledge mobilization on a range of environmental issues, addressing questions of how to integrate scientific knowledge with local, community-based, and Indigenous knowledge to address global environmental crises such as Climate Change. The School is also home to many activist student groups advocating for environmental action. Don Misener
Don Misener (A.D. Misener) (1911-1996) was a physicist. Along with Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa and John F. Allen, Misener discovered the superfluid phase of matter in 1937. Misener was a graduate student at the University of Toronto in 1935. He joined Allen at Cambridge University in about 1937. Dianne Saxe
Dianne Saxe is a Canadian lawyer and politician who was elected to represent Ward 11 University—Rosedale on Toronto City Council following the 2022 municipal election. Before entering politics, Saxe practised environmental law and served as the last environmental commissioner of Ontario from 2015 to 2019. Miriam Diamond
Miriam Diamond (born 1955) is an environmental chemist and a professor at the University of Toronto. She started the Professor Diamond's Environmental Research Group which works to develop strategies that reduce dangerous contaminants in the environment. Kimberly Strong
Kimberly "Kim" E. Strong is an atmospheric physicist and the first woman to serve as chair of the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto. Her research involves studying stratospheric ozone chemistry, climate, and air quality using ground-based, balloon-borne and satellite instruments. Early life and education Strong received a Bachelor of Science in physics from the Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1986. Eva Ligeti
Eva Bobbi Ligeti (born 1950) is a Canadian lawyer and academic, with a particular focus on environmental law and regulation. She was the first Environmental Commissioner of Ontario. History Eva Ligeti was appointed in 1994 as the first Environmental Commissioner of Ontario. Her selection was made by an all-party committee of Ontario provincial legislature. Ligeti remained Commissioner until 1999, reviewing the government's compliance with the Environmental Bill of Rights and reporting to an all-party committee of the Ontario legislature. In her annual report of April, 1999, she warned of a public health crisis as a result of high levels of air pollution. Jack Layton
