The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is a Public university, public Academic health science centre, academic health science center in Galveston, Texas, United States. It is part of the University of Texas System. UTMB includes the oldest medical school in Texas, and has about 11,000 employees. Southeast Texas is a cultural and geographic region in the U.S. state of Texas, bordering Southwest Louisiana and its greater Acadiana region to the east. The Sealy & Smith Foundation is a charitable foundation incorporated in Texas and based in the island city of Galveston. It was established in 1922 by John Sealy, II and his sister Jennie Sealy Smith with a charter stating a mission to: The foundation's endowment is funded from various sources, including mineral rights in the Permian Basin. It focuses the majority of its funding on programs supporting the healthcare and research at the University of Texas Medical Branch and its primary care facility, the John Sealy Hospital. Marie Charlotte Schaefer
Marie Charlotte Schaefer (June 24, 1874 - May 27, 1927) was an early Texas physician and the first woman to become a faculty member of the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). Biography Schaefer was born in San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas and attended San Antonio High School where she graduated as the salutatorian in 1893. After high school, she taught for a year and then enrolled in the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in 1895. She earned her medical degree in 1900 and then did a year-long residency in pathology at the John Sealy Hospital. At the hospital, she worked on the pathology of Hookworm infection, hookworms. In 1901, she became the first woman faculty member of UTMB. She gave the opening speech on the first day of school at UTMB in 1912. In 1915, she became a full professor of embryology and ten years later in 1925, a full professor of histology. James Edwin Thompson
James Edwin Thompson (May 21, 1863 - April 9, 1927) was an England-born surgeon who spent much of his life in the United States. He was the first vice-president and a founding member of the American College of Surgeons. He served as the inaugural chairman for the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. Early life and education Thompson was born May 21, 1863, in Norwich, England, to John and Mary () Thompson. Thompson attended the Witton Grammar School, Owens College (receiving the Bradley and Dumville Scholarships), Manchester School of Medicine, and University of London, receiving bachelor's degree in medicine and surgery from the latter. Ashbel Smith Building
The Ashbel Smith Building, also known as Old Red, is a Romanesque Revival building located in Galveston, Texas. It was built in 1891 with red brick and sandstone. Nicholas J. Clayton was the architect. It was the first University of Texas Medical Branch building. In 1949, the building named for Ashbel Smith, a Republic of Texas diplomat and one of the founders of the University of Texas System. The building was registered as a Texas Historical Landmark in 1969 and renovated in 1985. In 2008, Old Red was flooded with six feet of water by Hurricane Ike.
