United States Senate Election In Nevada, 1964
The 1964 United States Senate election in Nevada was held on November 3, 1964. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Howard Cannon won re-election to a second term by a slim margin of only 48 votes. Cannon defeated Paul Laxalt by a very narrow margin despite Lyndon Baines Johnson winning the state over Barry Goldwater in a landslide in the concurrent presidential election in Nevada. To date, this remains the closest Senate race in US history since the passing of the 17th amendment in which the winner was seated as Senator. Howard Cannon
Howard Walter Cannon (January 26, 1912 – March 5, 2002) was an American politician from Nevada. A member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party, he served four terms in the United States Senate representing Nevada from 1959 to 1983. Born in St. George, Utah, Cannon graduated from Northern Arizona University and the James E. Rogers College of Law, University of Arizona Law School. In 1940, Cannon won his first election as county attorney for Washington County, Utah. The following year with the start of World War II, Cannon served in the United States Army for a year and then in the United States Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Cannon later served in the United States Air Force Reserve, Army Air Forces Air Reserve as a major general. Paul Laxalt
Paul Dominique Laxalt ( ; August 2, 1922 – August 6, 2018) was an American attorney and politician who served as the 22nd governor of Nevada from 1967 to 1971 and a United States senator representing Nevada from 1974 until 1987. A member of the Republican Party, he was one of Ronald Reagan's closest friends in politics. After Reagan was elected president in 1980, many in the national press referred to Laxalt as "the first friend". He was the older brother of writer Robert Laxalt and maternal grandfather of Adam Laxalt, who served as the 33rd attorney general of Nevada from 2015 to 2019. The 1964 United States presidential election in Nevada took place on November 3, 1964, as part of the 1964 United States presidential election. State voters chose three representatives, or electors, to the Electoral College, who voted for president and vice president. Nevada was won by incumbent President Lyndon B. Johnson ( D–Texas), with 58.58% of the popular vote, against Senator Barry Goldwater ( R–Arizona), with 41.42% of the popular vote. Ormsby County, Nevada
Ormsby County was a county in Nevada Territory from 1861 to 1864 and in the State of Nevada from 1864 until 1969. It contained Carson City, the county seat, and later, the state capital, founded two years earlier. Name It was named after Major William Ormsby, one of the original settlers of Carson City, killed along with seventy-five other men in 1860, in an unsuccessful attempt to subdue a perceived uprising of Paiute people near Pyramid Lake, Nevada, which was at the time part of Utah Territory. History Ormsby County was established in 1861 with creation of Nevada Territory. The county's population dwindled significantly after the gold rush days. The 1964 United States Senate elections were held on November 3. The 33 seats of Class 1 were contested in regular elections. Special elections were also held to fill vacancies. They coincided with the election of President Lyndon B. Johnson by an overwhelming majority, to a full term.
