United States Deputy Secretary Of Veterans Affairs
The deputy secretary of veterans affairs, in the United States government, is the chief operating officer of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, responsible for a nationwide system of health care services, benefits programs, and national cemeteries for America's veterans and their dependents. The deputy secretary is the second-highest-ranking officer in the department and succeeds the United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs, secretary in the event of his resignation, death, or otherwise inability to fulfill his duties. The deputy secretary is appointed by the president and confirmed by the United States Senate, Senate. The position was created with the creation of the Department of Veterans Affairs in October 1988. Paul Reynold Lawrence (born ) is an American government official, businessman, author and former army captain who is serving as the 11th United States Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs since March 2025 under President Donald Trump. He previously served as the 7th Under Secretary of Veterans Affairs for Benefits from 2018 to 2021. Early life and education Lawrence's father was a veteran of the Korean War, Korean and Vietnam War, Vietnam wars, and is buried in Section 66 of Arlington National Cemetery. Lawrence's middle name, Reynold, was given in honor of his uncle who was killed at Normandy during World War II. Lawrence was commissioned into the army through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps, ROTC. He earned his Bachelor of Arts, BA in economics from the University of Massachusetts in 1978, and his Master of Arts, MA and Doctor of Philosophy, PhD in economics from Virginia Tech in 1982. James Byrne (lawyer)
James Michael Byrne (born August 28, 1964) is an American lawyer who served as the United States Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs from August 2018 to February 2020. He previously served as the general counsel for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Education Byrne receive an undergraduate engineering degree from the United States Naval Academy, where he was a distinguished graduate and the brigade commander. Sloan Duncan Gibson IV (born 1952/1953) is the former United States Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Gibson was confirmed as the Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs by the United States Senate on February 11, 2014, replacing former Deputy Secretary W. Scott Gould who resigned on May 17, 2013.
