United States Deputy Secretary Of State
The deputy secretary of state of the United States is the principal deputy to the United States Secretary of State, secretary of state. If the secretary of state resigns or dies, the deputy secretary of state becomes acting secretary of state until the president nominates and the Senate confirms a replacement. The position was created in 1972. Prior to July 13, 1972, the Under Secretary of State, under secretary of state had been the second ranking officer of the United States Department of State, Department of State. The State Department is the only federal cabinet-level agency to have two co-equal deputy secretaries. Christopher Landau
Christopher Thomas Landau (born November 13, 1963) is a Spanish-born American lawyer and diplomat who has served as the United States Deputy Secretary of State, United States deputy secretary of state since 2025. He previously served as the List of ambassadors of the United States to Mexico, United States ambassador to Mexico from 2019 to 2021. Landau studied law at Harvard University. David Kenneth Rush (January 17, 1910 – December 11, 1994) was a United States Ambassador who helped negotiate the groundbreaking Four-Power Agreement in 1971 that ended the post-war crisis over Berlin.
